"I still can't believe you bought me a dress."
"I saw it, and I imagined you," Sebastian said with a smile. "I knew I had to take you out."
Melanie looked around. This was a quaint little restaurant. It was bustling and full tonight, mostly couples on Saturday night dinner dates, as well as a family or two. It was a beautiful night outside, too, the June air keeping the draft between New York's buildings cool with light breezes. She was so happy to have Sebastian back from Europe.
"How did you find this place?" she asked her boyfriend.
Sebastian shrugged. "Mackie recommended it to me a while back," he said. "It's cute, right?"
"It's adorable," Mel remarked. There were photos all along one wall, families and black and white photos of celebrities. There was only two windows, both up by the front door, and they were sitting more towards the middle of the restaurant. The floor was black and white tile, and the walls were a muted red. The food was amazing, too.
The waiter collected their dinner plates and handed them each a dessert menu. "What do you want?" asked Sebastian, after scanning the menu for a few seconds.
"I don't know," began Melanie, looking over the menu. "They have key lime pie," she read. "Want to get that?" She looked up at him.
Sebastian was just smiling at her, his eyes full of love.
"What?" she said, chuckling a little.
"Nothing," Sebastian shook his head. "I just love you."
"Well, I love you too," she said. "Almost as much as I love key lime pie."
Sebastian chuckled. "Is that so?"
Melanie nodded.
"Alright," Sebastian said. "Key lime pie it is."
Once the waiter came back around, they ordered their dessert. He took the menus, and without another conversation, the couple simply looked at each other for a moment. Sebastian reached his hand across the table and took Mel's hand in his.
"I love you," he said.
"I know you do," Melanie replied, smiling. "I love you, too."
Sebastian just smiled at her. After a couple of minutes, their dessert arrived, and they each took a bite. It was delicious. Everything was perfect about tonight— the dress, the restaurant, everything. Melanie was so so happy to have him back again. She never liked leaving his side.
"I really love you, Mel," he said.
She chuckled. "You just said that."
"I know," he said. "I know. But you mean everything to me." Melanie was slightly confused as he went on, but as he continued, the confusion turned to surprise. "You're there through thick and thin, Mel. You're amazing, perfect, funny, always positive, and so beautiful." Sebastian got out of his chair and knelt beside her, pulling a small velvet box out of his pocket. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Melanie. I want to marry you." Inside of the perfect little box was an even more perfect ring, a small, simple diamond in a gold band.
Tears welled inside Melanie's eyes as she smiled, her hand cupped over her mouth. Heads in the restaurant began to turn to them, also waiting eagerly for Melanie's answer. "Oh, my God, Sebastian," she said. "Yes. A thousand times, yes."
Sebastian placed the ring on her finger as people in the restaurant began to politely applaud and congratulate the couple. They stood up and hugged each other, then quickly kissed, saving the best for after they'd leave the restaurant and go home. For the rest of the night, Melanie just couldn't stop staring at the ring.
She was getting married to the love of her life. Melanie Stan. How good does that sound?
