Monday.
I took a quick shower and got ready for school.
"I'm headed to work!," Rayne yelled as she shut the front door.
"I'll drive you to school," Jax said knocking on my door.
"Okay!"
I slipped on my glittery sandals and opened my door.
"Beautiful now let's go we're running late," he said walking to the front door. I grabbed a granola bar from the counter and ran to the car.
He was pushing the speed limit as we drove to school."Jax is there a test or something? I've never seen you so anxious to get to school."
"I'm all about being on time to math," he said running a hand through his long hair. I just bit my lip and nodded.
"Right?," I questioned turning up the music from his iPhone and looking out the window.
"We're here," he said pulling into the parking lot and turning off the car.
"Nobody is even here yet," I complained.
"That's the point. Come on," he said grabbing my hands and pulling me towards the school.
"The doors are locked," I said with an eye roll.
He pulled on the side door of the school and it came open easily.
"So do you do this often? Take your new girlfriends into a dark school before it even opens?"
"Actually no. I just have business to take care of. Stay in the girls locker room."
"You took me here to lock me in the girls locker room while you handle your 'business'?"
"Sorry I just have to handle something quickly."
Then he walked out towards the guys locker room, which was on the other side of the gym. I slowly walked towards the guys locker room slowly after. Worst day ever to wear sandals. I finally decided to take them off from the clicking and clacking they were making on the gym floor.
"You know the rules Jax. Your three short," a husky voice said.
"I know I know. I could only get twelve."
"You know the rules," he barked. "You've been in the game long enough to know."
"How much time do I have to get three?"
"26 hours."
"Okay. I'll get it," he said. "26 hours."
Then Jax came out of the locker room and practically ran into me.
"Avery were you listening into the locker room?," he asked furious.
"No I just came to see if you were alright. You took a long time."
Next thing I knew people were entering the gym and staring at Jax and I.
"Avery. Jax. Detention in my office after school," the gym teacher said.
"Yeah sure, whatever," I sighed running out of the gym and to my locker. I heard Jax running behind me, but I wasn't going to wait for him and be late for class.
"Avery, I know you heard. Let me explain."
"Okay," I said turning around. "Explain."
"I'm racing," he said. "Like...illegally."
"What?!"
"Um...yeah. Like do you know how people.race on street roads at night for cash?"
I nodded.
"Well Me, Michael, and Kacey all race and what not. But I'm the one that hands the money to the guy that runs and whatever. It's 500 dollars a piece, but Kacey only had two hundred dollars because he lost his last race. So I gave him what we could...but I need three hundred dollars by tomorrow for Kacey..."
"Then just have him not enter the race."
"If he doesn't enter then people get suspicious and things get ugly..."
"Then I'll give you three hundred dollars. No big deal," I shrugged.
"I couldn't ask you to do that Avery."
"Better me then Courtney. She would practically throw it at him."
"I'll pay you back okay?"
"You don't have to. But after detention we'll hit the ATM and get money out. Okay?"
He nodded.
***
After we got out if detention it was 4:45. We walked to his car and drove to the ATM. I got the money out and handed it to him. He took it and shoved it in his pocket. Then we drove to an abandoned building. Which he made me stay inside the car as he went in there.
When he came out he turned on the car and looked to me. "Get down."
"What?"
"I said Get Down!," he shouted at me as he shoved my head down so my face was in my lap.
Then a man came up to Jax's window and seen me. "Who's the girl?"
"My girlfriend Tony. She's cool."
"Five hundred by tomorrow," he snapped to me. "Or else. Jax do you mind telling her what will happen?"
Jax gripped the steering wheel and looked straight ahead. "He'll watch you. And when the time is right, he'll kill you."
I nodded my head. "Five hundred. By tomorrow."
So seems like we'd have to go back to the ATM.
