~Adrian~

I pulled up in front of Travis’ house. I hadn’t seen him in two days the last time being that day when I dropped him off in front of his house. I honked and leaned back in my seat while waiting for Travis to come out.

I saw movement out of the corner of my eye and turned my head to see Travis running to the car. I noticed that he was limping a bit and I furrowed my brows.

“Hey Adrian.” He strapped himself in and finally got a good look at him.

“What the hell happened to you?” he had a black eye a split lip and several bruises on his neck that went down his t-shirt.

“Nothing, just drive.” He proceeded to pull out a hoodie and put it on covering the worst of the marks.

“You can’t honestly think that I believe you.” I turned off the engine and turned to face him. “Travi, what happened? I know for sure that you came home bruise-free on Tuesday and yesterday you were absent. This obviously didn’t happen at school. Tell me the truth, did he do it?”

Travis was silent for a while before he sniffed and started crying. I wanted to reach over and hug or pat him on the shoulder but I was afraid that he’d pull away from me. He needed a friend right now, so a friend was exactly what I was going to be.

I didn’t say anything as he continued to cry. When he wanted to speak, he’d come out and say something but I wasn’t going force him.

“He wanted to hit Eleanor. I stopped him and took the beatings instead.” He had finally calmed down enough for me to understand him. “I couldn’t let him hit my sister. He wasn’t supposed to come home so early.”

“That’s it. You’re a minor, he can’t do this. I’m going to report him to the police.” I hit the steering wheel in frustration.

“No!” he yelled suddenly. “Please, don’t do that. I’m fine, I swear.”

“You’re not fine at all, Travi.” I gestured to his bruises and his face. “He beats you up whenever he feels like it and uses you as his rag doll. Why the hell are you so reluctant to report the bastard?”

“My brothers and sisters, that’s why.” He whispered. “If I had him reported, they would take them away from me. They’d separate us all and put us in foster homes. I’d rather get beaten up every day than be separated from my family. And my dad; they’d put him in a place that I don’t have the money for. Please, promise me you won’t go to the police.”

He clutched onto my t-shirt and he still had tears in his eyes with new ones quickly forming. I looked down to my feet. I was trying to be extremely curious about this entire situation. What Travis was asking me to do…it was almost impossible to listen.

"Okay, I promise. But if he hurts you again, come to my house immediately, okay?” he nodded his head quickly.

I re-started the engine and finally started the short drive to school. Right now, I didn’t care if we were going to be late. Travis was way more important to me.

“Adrian, if you and Landon don’t mind, I’m trying to teach a lesson over here.” Brad, our English sub, said. We thought that it was cool of him to let us call him Brad. He wasn’t that much older than us anyway.
