Chapter Eighteen

It seemed that the time didn’t come for a long while. Two weeks past; full of training, sleeping, eating and more training. Everyday Mr. Yuko told her more about the Warlocks and Elle was beginning to believe that he was just making up half of it, there seemed to be so much. The others also learnt more about their creatures and had begun experimenting with what they could do.

Josh managed to turn into a squirrel. Eve, who had an amazing natural talent helped grow a tree from a seed into a fully grown plant in less than an hour. Oliver jumped five feet into the air. Key smelt a rabbit in its hole 20 meters away. Patrick learnt how to change small parts of his body. And Luca was able to breath fire.

She didn’t have the right to complain but Elle couldn’t help but feel left out. At night the others would sit together, laugh, and show off their new skills they learnt; while Elle could only watch in amazement and ramble on a little bit about what a Warlock could do.

The Northern gate Hunters got word from across the country about how everything else was doing and for now it seemed to have calmed down. The Hunters had taken control of the excess amount of demons that’d emerged, and the movement that they’d felt had for now disappeared. Candival was still on high alert and the council kept everyone on guard.

It was seventeen days after their initial arrival that Mr. Yuko came to Elle with the news she had been waiting for. That day at training Elle and him went to their room but he brought the Warlock book. He’d taught Elle how to understand the book and though she could only read a few words Elle knew what to do when he presented it to her.

‘This spell, the first Rakia, is the simplest and least harmful spell in the book. Take your time, read through it very carefully, and then try. If at any point you feel doubtful or worried you will not complete the spell properly I want you to drop the book and step away, let all your spiritual energy relax and leave your body,’ Mr. Yuko stared her right in the eye.

Elle nodded reassuringly, taking a breath as he handing her the book. She took it, surprised to find her hands shaking from excitement and nervousness.

‘I can do this,’ she said as she peeled open the cover. The Rakia was on the first page but she could not understand its language; the only thing that looked familiar was a print of a leaf in the left hand corner of the page. The leaves could range from one to five, signaling the power of the spell to the conjurer, fifth being the most powerful. Not only could it inflict immense damage if performed wrong a five leaf spell was more complicated and took the most concentration and energy to perform. Mr. Yuko explained to her that the spell she’d conjured in the hall against the demon had most likely been a level three, though he did no know for sure because it was not contained in his book. She’d asked him again about it, why she’d been able to cast the spell, he replied by saying the Warlocks are the oldest and probably least understood of all the creatures. Maybe it was a natural instinct and her creature came out to protect its host. ‘It seems that your creature can adapt and grow to survive. A very important skill to have.’

‘Go on, try it now,’ Mr. Yuko urged. ‘You know what to do.’

Elle nodded, stepping back and peering into the book. She scanned the lines, skimming through the words until she came to the one she wanted. She read the paragraph at least seven times, memorizing each word into her mind, branding it there so she would not miss one syllable.

‘I think I have it,’ she passed the book back to her teacher and took a deep breath. Closing her eyes Elle relaxed her body, letting her balance drift to the middle and her mind set onto the spell she’d read. Elle stood there for ten minutes, calmly, not moving a muscle, as she inched closer to the state of mind where she’d loose herself, just like Mr. Yuko had taught her.
