When Merlin came into her room, he wanted to give her a "Don't scare me like that ever again," speech, but he... He just couldn't do it.
"Don't scare me like that, ever again."
Lucy smiled softly.
"I cannot promise anything. You're doing it better then I actually thought."
"Excuse me?"
"I thought you would freak out, telling me I should not dear doing something like this ever again, repeating it more then twenty times..."
She turned her head a bit.
"Oh dear. You were actually planning on doing that, weren't you?"
"Someone like you shouldn't faint, Lucy," Merlin quickly said. "Never. You know that."
"You are really worried, aren't you?"
"Yes, I am worried!" Merlin replied. "I want you to be all right!"
"That's the same thing I want for you, Merlin," Lucy said. "Isn't there something wrong with your right hand?"
Oh oh. She knew.
"I guess we both know what this means, don't we?"
Merlin knew what it meant. Oh yeah, he knew exactly what this meant.
"Shouldn't we be starting... You know, making sure everything necessary..."
He closed his eyes, and he knew she was right.
"I... I will take care of it."

After a little while of searching, Merlin found Arthur in his chambers, writing some important documents.
"Merlin, how is Lucy doing?"
"She is doing much more better, thank you."
"And when are you going to admit that you actually love her?"
Merlin... He didn't know what to say. This came very unexpected, and this was nothing for Arthur.
"I... Who are you, and what have you done with prince Arthur? Wait, are you sure you are the clothpole were I'm actually working for?"
"Merlin, shut up," Arthur gave him as a response. "For more then an entire month, people in this castle are watching the two of you being around each other, and everyone knows it, except the two of you. Do you remember what you said to me, all these years back? Even a blind man could see it. Beside that, your work is suffering amongst this-"
"Arthur, I know."
Arthur had expected a typical Merlin comment, but it did not came.
"She understands me in a way no one does, and our magical bond is this strong... Gaius said he has never seen something like it in his entire life. But I will never be in the position to say how I really feel about her. We've talked without words, but saying it directly-"
He sighed, and dropped three bundles on the table. Arthur could immediately see that these bundles had everything to do with magic.
"There... There will be a day, you can't count on Lucy or me for magical guidance, or help... Just blow what is in one of those three bundles into the wind. Advice will come."
"Merlin... Why are you giving me these?"
"Just... Don't ask, okay? Please. And don't lose them. It is very important you don't lose them."
Arthur nodded. When Merlin had left the room, he sat back behind the table.
There was something wrong. He only didn't know if he should ask what it exactly was.

That night, Merlin went to the great dragon, to a meeting what would be the last one between the two friends, for a very long time.
"I see something is troubling you, young warlock?" The dragon asked.
"It has begun, hasn't it?" Merlin asked. "The suffering. We will suffer like no human ever has. I know it has begun."
"Indeed it has," the dragon answered. "There is no reason to be affraid. It is your destiny."
"But when there is no reason, why am I feeling so affraid then?" Merlin asked. "I would sacrifice my life, if it would keep Arthur and Camelot safe, and I know all of this is supposed to happen for the good of Camelot, but I am affraid, Kilgharrah. I am affraid, and I don't know why."
"You are affraid, because you are not walking this path alone anymore, Merlin," the old dragon answered. "Like I have said before, you and Lucy are each others equals in everything, and from now on, you are walking the same path together. And you love her. You are affraid of what might come on her path."
"But I can't be in love with her!" Merlin said. "She is the daughter of the triple goddess, and I... I am just me. Idiotic Merlin, the manservant of king Arthur."
"Merlin..."
The old dragon sighed. "You should know better by now. You are Emrys. You and Arthur are two sides of the same coin. You will rebuild the lands of Albion together. You already have. And of course you can love her. Didn't I say you are each others equals?"
"Yes, but-"
"Well then, what is the problem?"
"I don't want to see her hurt. There is still Freya, and..."
Merlin sighed.
"I guess I still need to find the power to say what I truly feel."
"You will tell her, someday," The dragon said. "I am sure of that."
"Do you have any idea what it will be like?" Merlin asked. "The suffering. Evolving. Entering a new dawn?"
"I don't know much, young Warlock," the dragon said. "And some things are not up to me to tell. But I do know that the battle against Morgana will be the greatest battle you have ever seen, and Arthur will need both of you to fight it."
Merlin bowed.
"Thank you for your wisdom."
"As always."

The following day, everyone continued their work, and so did Lucy. Happily, she prepared everything for the babies, together with Gwen, and she even let some magic spells loose, to get to know what the children would be. Boys? Girls maybe? A boy and a girl?
"I think you will have a boy and a girl, my lady," Lucy said. "Have you and the king already thought about names?"
"Yes we have," Gwen responded. "But you will know the day they are born."
On a audience, Arthur received word from queen Annis, queen of Caerleon. Morgana was searching for dark sorcerers within her lands, and seemed to take all the dark creatures in the lands away. It was good for Caerleon ofcourse, but she thought Arthur would like to know. This, in combination with Merlin and Lucy acting the way they did... Something was coming. And he would like to know what it was.
