Maria Gonzales jumped out her bed and ran to the bathroom. The nightmare she had just had totally and completely scared her to death. Her hair was slicked on her head, her face red and her body shaking. What Sasha had asked her to do could get her killed. Rubbing her hands through her wet black hair she jumped in the shower.
Maria Gonzales had worked for Santos for over ten years. She didn't work for him by choice, she was basically given to him by Pedro Rivera as payment for a debt. She originally worked for Pedro so he used her as a wager at a poker game. Before that her uncle that hated her with a passion sold her to Pedro for $300 to get his farm out of debt in San Juan.
Her uncle Carlos was mean. When her parents died he took her in only to have sexual relations with her. She fought him for months until one day he said he had enough and sold her to Pedro; she was only sixteen years old.
Pedro Rivera had his way with her at the age of eighteen. He said that way, no one could accuse him of having sex with a child. It had been two days after her birthday when he had taken her. She cried for days until finally the tears ran out. Pedro used her so much for his own pleasure that it had gotten to the point she just laid there and took it. Sex was never enjoyable but that was the only way to survive. For five years she took the abuse and never said a word. She was just a woman, she didn't have rights she was property.
Maria got out the shower and wrapped the towel around her. She wiped the mirror with her hands as the steam covered it. The person standing before her was not the same person that stared at her fifteen years ago. The happy person who use to laugh and sing was no longer there, but replaced with a gloomy, pushover. She wondered what had she done in her previous life to end up like this? No one should live an existence without love or freedom. She was given to Santos as payment for a wager. How had this happened?
When Santos saw her, she had no sparkle or life. But working for him was worse. Although he didn't sleep with her or try, he worked her like a slave. From sun up to sun down he cracked the whip to make sure everything was up to par. She made all the meals, cleaned, did laundry not just not for him but his men too. When things did not go right, Santos would discipline her by physically abusing her with slaps or punches. She had had her jaw broken a couple of times and four broken ribs in the past ten years.
Santos last girlfriend Samir was beautiful but after he had become possessive of her and she tried to leave, she was found a week later brutally murdered in her apartment. With most of the police department on his payroll it was swept under the rug.
Alejandro was a man you feared. He was a non sense type of guy. The dream Maria had was of him brutally beating her because of Sasha. Sasha didn't deserve to be locked up in a room and drugged up. Maria had seen the way Santos stayed with Sasha locked up in the room. He had that same type of possessiveness in his eyes as he did with Samir. Sasha was beautiful and had a young man waiting for her return. That was something she had never had, but she did believe in love even if it was just in her romance novels.
Maria quickly dressed and pinned her hair back. Today was a new day and even if today was her finally day on earth she would do the right thing. Maybe it would be her one last good deed to help get into heaven, what did she have to lose?
She quickly walked into the mansion headed to Santos's office.
"Maria why wasn't Luis informed that the rug was damaged? You have been here to long not to noticed their were stains in that rug. Whatever maid is assigned to this office is fired. That rug cost what you would make in a lifetime working for me," Santos yelled at her. She had purposely spilled coffee from yesterday on it.
"I'm sorry, I will get it taken care of as soon as possible. I have to go into town to market and there is a place that can clean it."
"Do what you have to Maria, or it will be your ass next."
"Yes, sir," she said bowing her head. She walked out the room with a small smile on her face, her plan had actually worked and it was the first time in years she felt happy.
Maria delivered Sasha'a breakfast. Sasha was coming out the bathroom with a long sundress on. She still looked beautiful even with dark circles around her eyes.
"How do you feel?"
"Awful Maria. They found out I took the IV out, so now she injects me with the needle. Can you help me back to the bed?" Sasha leaned against Maria.
"Thank you," Sasha words came out slurred. Maria knew she had to get Sasha out there fast.
She laid Sasha down in the bed. She placed the covers over her to see blood stains in her gown. Maria gasped. "You're bleeding."
"I know and I don't feel well." She was barely responding and Maria got worried.
"Ms. Sasha please wake up." Sasha head rolled around as if she was slipping in and out of consciousness.
"Maria, take this. If I die, please tell him I love him." Sasha pulled the paper from under her mattress. "Give this to your friend, please tell him to help me."
"Ms. Sasha I will, let me get the nurse."
"She is killing me Maria, I'm scared. I am bleeding and I don't know why. My body aches and I think it is from the medicine."
Maria looked at Sasha and realized something was terribly wrong. "Let me get Mr. Santos."
Sasha started to get sweat across her brow. Maria ran out the room yelling in Spanish. The bodyguard ran and got the nurse and Santos. Maria placed the paper in her pocket and pulled the covers up on Sasha.
"What's wrong with her?" Santos asked with panic in his voice.
"Maybe the medication is not working anymore and she is getting sick. I will call the doctor to see about her," the nurse said grabbing her cell phone walking out the door.
"Stay with me Sasha," Santos said wiping her brow. His hand suddenly stopped as he looked back at Maria. He seemed rattled and disoriented as he looked down at Sasha.
"I fell in love with her years ago. I tried everything to keep her but it didn't work. I thought this time would be different," he said rubbing her cheek. The nurse came back in and told them that the doctor was on his way.
"Maria please go to market and get what we need. I want the doctor to stay here just in case he has too. Have the maid set up one Of the guest rooms."
Maria nodded and headed to door. She was amazed to hear the confession from Santo's mouth. She knew when he first brought her here that there was a connection, but Sasha never mentioned it before. She left the mansion as Alberto pulled up. She got in and they headed to market. She was really concerned for Sasha and she prayed that she would be alright.
He finally made it to the market place. "Mr. Santos has a stain in the rug and he wants it cleaned. Please stop at the rug store so I can get something to clean it. I will only be a moment." Alberto stopped the car in front of the store.
"Welcome," Michael said smiling at her. Michael was extremely good looking for an older American man. He was tall with salt ad pepper hair. He was fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.
"How can I help you, Maria?"
"Well I'm here for two things. First my boss has a stain in the rug and it needs to be removed."
Michael looked at her, "what kind if stain?"
"Coffee."
"Should not be a problem. I can make a solution for you and give you instructions on how to do it." He said handing her the tips on paper. She looked down at it and placed it in her pocket.
"You said you came here for two reasons. The second reason.."
Maria reached in her pocket and pulled out Sasha's note. "I can't really read English but can you help
my friend she is sick and I am worried about her.
Michael took the note and gasped at it. He walked around the counter and stood in front of her.
"Do you know what this note is saying? Is she really being held against her will or is this a plot against Alejandro Santos?"
"It is true." Maria looked around the store. "She is sick and she needs help. Please I am begging you, she could die."
Michael looked at her as tears rolled down her face. This was the first time she had really spoken to him. For her to come to him meant a lot. He had come to Venezuela to make a fresh start and now getting involved with Alejandro Santos was a no no.
"If I help you he could kill us. I came to Venezuela for retirement, not to end up dead."
"Please you are the only one I trust," she said looking into his brown eyes. He wanted to turn her down but her tears and sadness in her voice tugged at his heart strings.
"I have a friend that works for the US government and I will call him. Wait here while I make it."
"Thank you."
As Michael was walking to the back, he saw Maria's driver walking in.
"What is taking so long?" Alberto asked.
Michael turned around and said," I have to make the solution, it should not take long."
Alberto walked around the store and found a seat. Maria was nervous and hoped he wouldn't notice anything.
Twenty minutes later, Michael walked back in. He moved closer to her and had his back facing Alberto.
"I made the call, and left a message. Here is the solution I promised. I hope he can help."
"Thank you señor."
"You are welcome. Good luck."
As Alberto stood up, Maria turned around and gave him a smile. He smiled back and she walked out he door.
Typing on I-phone, hope it came out okay. Thanks for reading, commenting and voting. I appreciate it.
