CHAPTER 11

A week passed and I couldn't concentrate on much. I had cried myself to sleep after I got home that day. I still did my job at the house, but the memory of my dad was painful and I didn't know what to do.

Sarah noticed the change and when she asked me, I couldn't really tell her. I told her I was tired and needed rest. Good thing the twins didn't notice. I made sure that they wouldn't be able to notice that I was having a hard time.

I decided to call Sofia and tell her what was bothering me. It was almost midnight and all I could hear were the whispers of the insects from the garden. At least these insects had a life.

What is this woman doing? She's not answering her phone, that's a first. I dialed again, and on the second ring, she finally answered. "Bestie! Sorry ha! Galing ako sa banyo. HAHAHAHA!"

"Ew, hinugasan mo mga kamay mo?" Tanong ko sa kanya.

"Duh! Of course, umihi lang ako noh! Hindi ako nag number 2, bukas pa siguro. Anyway, Napatawag ka? Okay ka lang ba?" Tanong naman niya. Tapos may nag sigawan. "Teka lang girl. Guys, I'm stepping out for a bit. I'm talking to Kaitlyn."

"Saan ka pala?"

On the other end of the line, I heard a door close and it was quiet again. "Kate, may volunteer program na sinalihan yung Marine club namin. We'll be exploring the Florida Keys. Sa Marathon kami first day, and I think our last stop will be in Key West."

"Hmm... ang saya naman. Matagal na rin akong hindi nakapunta ng Key West. I heard about that though from the Student Council, I forgot to ask you if you were going."

"Well, I'm here. Ay girl, sorry ha! I wasn't planning on going, pero maganda rin ito pang-dagdag sa resume ko, diba? Sayang, you should've come with us too. The program was offering free dives to licensed divers. Eh, none of us are licensed." Sofia added.

"That's why I keep telling you to get your Scuba diving test so you could get certified! Eh, ayan tuloy, sayang yung opportunity mo! You're in the Keys and you're not diving! That's just too sad. Crystal clear open water! Sad, indeed." I shook my head as I told my best friend.

"I know... kakainis nga. Sayang talaga. Di bale na, pag balik ko, that's the first thing I'll do." She laughed again.

"Anyway, when are you coming back? I'm getting bored without you."

"Don't worry, I should be back just in time for your party."

Oops. Yung party nga pala. "Uhm... about that... I don't know if I should go through with it."

She was quiet for a bit, but my phone rang again. She wanted to Facetime. "What are you talking about?" She asked loudly, while her face was practically pressed on the camera. I laughed softly.

"Ew, ang pangit mo, Inday. Anyway, I don't know. I'm not feeling it anymore." Humina boses ko, at alam kong napansin niya to.

Her voice softened too. "Kaitlyn, what's wrong? You know you can tell me anything, right?"

I nodded in response even though she couldn't see it.

"Well... it's my dad." I paused, and sighed. "When I went shopping with mom last week, she unintentionally mentioned dad. Bumabalik ang sakit, and hindi ko alam kung ano gagawin ko. I don't wanna go to mom because I know she'll be devastated again."

"Kaitlyn, it's alright to feel that way. He's your dad. Now that you mentioned him, I miss him too! See, you're not alone in this and I'm quite sure that your mom misses him the most. You should call her para mabawasan yang lungkot mo." Sofia confided and that's one of the reasons kung bakit siya lang talaga ang tinuturing kong best friend.

"I'll call her. Thanks, bes." I sighed, and I felt myself smile a little bit. But then I remembered why my mom mentioned dad at that time. I also realized that it was partially my fault. "Hay naku, nakakainis talaga si Daniel! It's his fault why my mom thought I was having boy troubles."

Naging excited si Sofia and based on the eagerness from her face, she wanted details. "Ayan naman pala eh! Si Belyakov pala ang dahilan. Nanaman. I'm not even surprised anymore."

Wala rin naman akong natatago sa kanya, eh di sabihan ko nalang.

"You will be when you hear what happened." I took a deep breath and told her. "I kissed him. I kissed Daniel Belyakov, and the bad thing was, nagustuhan ko talaga yung halik, bes. I don't know what to do!!!"

Sofia dropped her phone! I could tell because all I could see from the camera was her hand, from the ground picking it up, and a loud crash.

"OH. MY. GOD." And she repeated those words a hundred times, probably. She was also hyperventilating and trying to fan herself. "Kaitlyn, OMFG. Seriously? You did? OMG. Di ako makapaniwala! Girl! OMG! AHHHHH! I'm so freaking happy for you! Oh god, what the heck am I doing here? I should be there with you right now! CELEBRATING!!!"

"Uy Pia, kalma ka lang jan gurl. I really wished you're here right now. So much is going on and I feel like my mind's about to burst. I don't even know how I feel about him."

"Kate, I know may gusto ka sa kanya, nuon pa. If not, you wouldn't help him with his homework in the first place diba?" She asked me, and I nodded.

"But, I know he only pretended to like me. He flirted so that I'd help him with his homework. He's that kind of person."

Naalala ko yung pakiramdam ng nagdampi ang mga labi namin. Nag slow-mo sa isipan ko. The intensity of the kisses gave me chills. It was as if, he wanted to kiss me for a long time. He wanted my lips on his. I realized now that, I wanted, no, I needed his lips on mine.

"Bes, pumupula na yang mga pisngi mo." Sofia pulled me back to the present. And indeed my cheeks were turning red.

"I... I might like him, bes. I don't know what to do. He's a playboy and a F-boy. I don't want that anymore. I don't want to get hurt again. I don't think kakayanin pa ng puso kong masaktan." I almost choked from what I said.

Hindi na umimik si Sofia.

"But, you know what bes, I'm trying to be happy. Kahit hindi ako nag fo-focus sa love life ngayon, I'm happy. I'm happy that I get to work for a wonderful family. I'm not focusing sa mga 'love love' na yan right now, but maybe when the time comes that I do fall in love with someone, I'll eagerly welcome the thought."

"Basta Bes, pag balik ko, mag plano na tayo para sa 22nd birthday mo ha! Sagot naman ni Mr Belyakov yung party mo diba?" She asked.

"Sige, bes. Pag balik mo. Bisitahin mo nalang ako dito, okay lang naman sa kanila. Sige na bes, maaga pa ako bukas. I'm extremely glad you're my best friend. Thanks for listening to me. I love you!"

"Love you too, bes! See you soon ha! Goodnight!"

"Okayyyy..."

"Uy, bes! Kausapin mo si Daniel. Basta kausapin mo lang. Shet. Kinikilig ako sa inyo. Update mo ako pag balik ko." She hang up.

That girl's crazy. Napasaya talaga niya ako. Gumaan talaga ang pakiramdam ko.

"Kaitlyn, you're crazy. Daniel wouldn't like you, okay? You're just their nanny." I told myself, more like encouraging myself. Then, I laughed at the idea. It's been a while since I last heard my laugh, and it felt extremely good.

"You got this, Kaitlyn!"
