Josh twisted around and popped his back after I let go of his wrist. The sound made me shiver.
"I have a question, it's kind of big."
"What's up?" He asked.
"If I go to the funeral, will you go with me?"
"Why me?"
"I just, I want you to be there." I confessed.
"Are you sure it'll be okay?"
"I think so, they won't kick me out of a funeral."
"Okay, I'll go." He agreed. He got up off of the bed, then grabbed a pair of scissors from my desk and headed for the window sill.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"You can't just let this cute little thing slowly go away." He pulled the plant out of the soil and cut the last remaining bit of living plant off of the top and placed it in the dirt.
I instantly thought of the other day.
I was the plant.
He was cutting me free.
He threw the dead plant in the trash. I stared at him, speechless. My metaphor was no longer just in my head.
"Thank you," I said it quietly, but enough so he could hear me. He smiled.
Maybe he would cut me free.
"Kyn, you okay?"
I realized I was staring at him like a little kid stares into toy shop windows.
"Yeah, I was just thinking." Stood up from my bed just as Selena walked in my room. She was holding mail.
"You got another letter from-" when she looked up, she froze.
Josh just smiled at her. I was surprised she didn't drop everything in her hands and flip.
"Kyn- that's.... You're Josh Dun." She breathed with a smile forming on her face.
"Kyndall Josh dun is in your room!" She said excitedly.
"Josh, this is my sister Selena. Apparently she already knows you." I laughed. Josh smiled and decided to approach her.
"Hi, nice to meet you." He held out his hand and she shook it with a goofy grin on her face. Selena had always been a quieter girl, reserved and very studious. Right then she was an excited mess.
"I'm sorry, I can't believe Kyndall didn't tell me!" She said.
"She didn't know who I was so, it's all good."
"Kyndall! How could you not know!?" Selena laughed. I just shrugged.
"Okay, okay, I'm cool now. Anyways, nice to meet you too." She said with a calm smile. I walked over to her.
"Who is the letter from?" I asked.
"Vanderbilt, it's-" I snatched the letter and started tearing into it. I couldn't rip the envelope fast enough. Vanderbilt was the#1 school on my list of colleges.
Dear Ms. Kyndall Thomas, we regret to inform you that...
I didn't want to read the rest. I lowered the paper.
"Oh, Kyndall..." Selena touched my shoulder.
Selena got nothing but acceptance letters last year. She had the luxury of having to pick which college to go to. My first letter had been a rejection.
