Any werewolf knows that the bite isn't always a gift. Especially Derek Hale, who knew all too well of the possibilities of how the bite can affect someone. It can either turn you or kill you depending on the will of a person. Sometimes the bite can be used to heal life threatening wounds or diseases or even common things such as Scott's asthma or Erika's seizures. Then there's also the gaining of power, enhanced abilities, and speed, which were all a plus.
Being a werewolf may have its disadvantages, but to Derek the pros outweighed the cons. To him being a werewolf was strength, loyalty, and freedom. It definitely beat being a mere human who couldn't do anything useful, who were weak and fragile, and couldn't heal like werewolves could.
Which is why he never understood among a pack of supernatural creatures and beings, why someone like Stiles Stilinski didn't have any interest in the bite whatsoever.
