To do : Make your character original and unique. Same rules apply for your story. I'm pretty tired of seeing Harry's Twin Sister!11! or Athena's Daughter dates Leo!1!!

Not to do : Make your character fall in love with said love interest 1 chapter in. It's basically like : Chapter 1 : OC meets love interest, both fall in love at first glance Chapter 3 : Boyfriend and girlfriend Chapter 5 : Married with 5 kids Chapter 6 : Sorry, but I'm ending da book

Uh no. I need to know things about your character! Their personality, their fears and such. I can't just ship them with that character.
To do : Use spellcheck, oh my god. Or, don't rely on Raven to check your Harry Potter fanfic. *cough cough My Immortal*

Not to do : Yeah, yeah, this is pretty obvious, but don't make your character a Mary Sue. Unless your character is a nymph, or freaking Aphrodite herself, I don't think anyone has perfect waist length blonde hair with silver streaks in it with a size 0 waist, and beautiful kaleidoscope eyes *orbs* whoops. If you really really really want to make her that pretty, go ahead, but don't make her super duper athletic, extremely smart, and a great personality. That's when she becomes a Mary Sue. Maybe she's pretty, but not the smartest blade of grass in the field, not athletic at all, and has some personality issues.
