One secret? Fine. Only ONE friend.
But how do you tell them? It's not like you can invite them over, get them in your room, and say "Hey I'm a mermaid. Wanna go outside now?"
PLAN it. Take her/him to an aquarium. To the beach. Make a conversation about water or sea life or possibly even mermaids if it's more helpful. THEN tell them.
Remember, only one. One friend that you know 100% will stay with you for a long long time, possibly even forever. Make sure you trust them.
Give them time to process it in their mind that mermaids are real and that their friend is one. It's a big secret to take in and accept.
