They walked to the front door, and rang the doorbell. Alison noticed Ash waited impatiently, tapping his foot on the floor. “Calm down Ashton,” she told him.

Just as he was about to reply, the door opened. There stood a lady who looked like she was 40 years old. She had brown eyes and brown hair with blond highlights. Alison looked towards Ash for an introduction. She saw that Ashton was staring right at the lady. Then something clicked, she was Penelope.

Just to make sure she asked, “Hi, Are you Penelope by any chance?”

“Um… Yes I am! Who are you, might I ask?” she questioned.

Ali turned to Ashton and cleared her throat, “Your Sister-in-law!” she told him.

“WHAT!” Penelope shouted.

Alison just realised what was happening, “I… well you see… Ashton-”

“WHAT!” Penelope shouted again.

Alison was getting a little mad now. “Shut up!” she screamed right back.

“Ashton died before you were born sweetheart.” Penelope told Ali like she was stupid.

“I know,” Ali said rolling her eyes, “I was saying you’re his sister-in-law. If you would shut up and listen for a second, you would know!”

“Oh, well sorry,” she said slightly annoyed.

“Um… can I come in? It’s a little cold and I’d like to share some information.”

“Sure, I guess,” Penelope said, as she opened the door further and stepped aside.

Ali followed her into what looked like the family room. The walls were painted a beige-brown. There was a fireplace on the wall opposite the door. The TV was on the wall above the fireplace mantel. Ali saw a black and beige zebra-printed lounge sofa in front of the big window on the left wall. A black loveseat was positioned near the right wall. There was a black sofa against the wall with the door. A black chair, matching the loveseat and sofa was in a corner of the room. There was a rug in the center of the room with black, beige, and red swirls. The walls were loaded with lots and lots of pictures. Alison thought it was very… homey.

Ashton told Ali who everyone in the room was. They all looked up at Alison, waiting for her to say something.

Ali counted 10 others in the room, not including Ashton. “Can you um…send the kids upstairs?” she asked, “This is about Ash. I mean Ashton.”

A man who looked like an older version of Ash said, “Alright kiddos, up you go.”

The five children stood up without uttering a single word, and went upstairs. Ali felt uncomfortable being watched by so many people. Being nervous, she accidently blurted, “Ashton says he loves you and he’s standing by the window looking outside.”

Ashton’s mother, Rose, looked up at her and snapped, “Who on earth are you. This is a dirty joke. Get out! Get out now!”

“Ali, let’s go before I have to save you from my own family,” Ash said softly.

“No!” Ali said, “I told you I wold do this for you and I will, if they won’t believe me then we’ll prove it!” She turned to Ashton’s mother and said “Ask one question that only your family knows about, and Ashton will tell me the answer.”

“This is ridiculous! Get out of MY HOUSE!” Penelope said.

“WAIT!” Rose protested, “Let’s try this.”

“Okay, ask a question,” Alison challenged.

“What happened to peter’s robot?” she asked Alison.

Alison turned to Ashton, “I hid it under mom’s bed and played with it when no one was home.”

Alison repeated exactly that to his mother.

“Okay, why did he cry when he was 5?” she fired.

Ali turned to Ashton and then repeated the answer to Rose, “he thought he would magically grow, but he was still short.” Then Alison laughed, “really Ash? Magically grow?”

“I was five,” Ashton protested, “plus I’m tall now, you’re the short one.” He stuck his tongue out at her.

Alison stomped her foot like a little girl and crossed her arms over her chest. “Don’t talk down to me, I hate you!” she said not very nicely.

Ashton chuckled.

“DON’T LAUGH AT ME!” She yelled.

“Okay okay, Sorry! Now back to my family,” he said serious again.

She turned back to rose and nodded for her to continue.

Rose, Alison noticed, had tears in her eyes, “Where did he first see Penelope?”

“In her room, when he slept over at Jacks house because their windows were in front of each other.”

“What did he get me for my birthday the year he… died?” Rose asked weakly.

“He says he promised to always take care of you because he forgot to get you a real gift.”

“Why did he break that promise,” she whispered so low, Alison almost didn’t hear her. Rose was now full out crying, as was Peter and Samantha.

“Hey, guys! We didn’t come here to see you cry. Ashton says he loves you all and always watched over you, and I’m his…um…translator, I guess,” Alison said.

“Ali, we have to go now, tell Peter ‘happy birthday’, and that we will be back some other time,” Ashton whispered to her silently.

“He says, Happy birthday Peter, we’ll come again, but we’ve got to go now,” Alison told them, “and remember, we were never here.”

With that Alison and Ashton walked out to the car.
