Once,
there was a kingdom that fell to calamity,
Once,
two hearts made a promise to meet again,
Once,
a journey began that had no ending,
Ever,
was this story so familiar and yet so foreign.

Time was running infinitely short,
and the surrounding darkness was closing in tighter than she ever knew was possible, winding and weaving treacherously and ready to consume anything in its path of destruction.Struggling against those corrupt binds was a useless endeavor that would drain her rather quickly of her much needed energy, but a vague clarity of consciousness relentlessly pushed through the sludge and dredges of haziness, managing to reassure her that she was not helpless.
The unbidden thought filled her with a steady stream of vigor and strength that had been previously waxing and waning from one extreme to the next.
There was nothing to fear— s̶h̶e̶ h̶a̶d̶ e̶v̶e̶r̶y̶t̶h̶i̶n̶g̶ t̶o̶ f̶e̶a̶r̶ —for she confidently steeled her tender nerves and swiftly adjusted her dubious wits a m̶i̶l̶l̶i̶o̶n̶ thousand times before in eager preparation to keep everyone safe...
A painful ripple of unadulterated want arrested her frozen limbs, and she found herself mentally scrambling to clutch onto that strong emotion— something, anything, that proved, without a single doubt, she was still alive.
Faces and expressions and promises involuntarily floated amongst her faded memories.
T̶h̶e̶s̶e̶ w̶e̶r̶e̶ h̶e̶r̶ f̶r̶i̶e̶n̶d̶s̶ s̶h̶e̶ w̶a̶s̶ f̶i̶g̶h̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ f̶o̶r̶.
These distant memories were horribly unfamiliar phantoms, and yet, she silently wept nonetheless for those stolen moments— moments lost and moments left wandering in the deepest recesses of her chaotic mind without purpose because she could not remember who she was.
She desperately wanted to grasp onto those passing, blurry images with a burning desire, but when she subconsciously reached out to hold them tightly, they disappeared as if a silly little dream was inexplicably haunting her.
There was no helping her situation, either, for the niggling hunger to fight bubbled furiously beneath her skin that eventually crawled up her aching throat, a voiceless bloody cry that was trying to escape its shackles at her inexplicable powerlessness, yet her motionless limbs were uncooperative obstacles— held down like prisoners that were forced into submission.
Perpetually frozen in place probably since the day she became trapped in this endless cycle of nothingness, her fingers marginally twitched against her face, the small palms of her cold hands protectively shielding her from- from an unsatisfiable evil.
S̶a̶v̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶ ̶f̶r̶o̶m̶ ̶s̶t̶a̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶a̶t̶ ̶s̶i̶g̶h̶t̶l̶e̶s̶s̶ ̶e̶y̶e̶s̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶a̶ ̶c̶r̶u̶e̶l̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶l̶d̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶s̶p̶l̶a̶s̶h̶e̶s̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶w̶a̶r̶m̶ ̶c̶r̶i̶m̶s̶o̶n̶ ̶b̶l̶o̶o̶d̶— h̶o̶t̶, s̶t̶i̶c̶k̶y̶, g̶o̶d̶d̶e̶s̶s̶e̶s̶, w̶h̶y̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶s̶o̶ ̶m̶u̶c̶h̶?̶— l̶e̶a̶v̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶s̶i̶c̶k̶e̶n̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶i̶m̶p̶r̶e̶s̶s̶i̶o̶n̶s̶ ̶o̶n̶ ̶a̶ ̶o̶n̶c̶e̶ ̶w̶e̶l̶c̶o̶m̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶a̶c̶e̶.
This evil was a heavy thing, swirling and prying and snapping with a maliciousness that left her foolishly paralyzed, ceaselessly digging its shapeless form into her sensitive flesh akin to a cantankerous blight wanting to burrow and plague a new host with anger and violence.
S̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶i̶t̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶s̶t̶o̶p̶, w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶i̶t̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶b̶e̶t̶t̶e̶r̶, ̶b̶u̶t̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶a̶l̶l̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶ ̶f̶a̶u̶l̶t̶, s̶h̶e̶ ̶d̶e̶s̶e̶r̶v̶e̶d̶ ̶i̶t̶, s̶h̶e̶ ̶d̶e̶s̶e̶r̶v̶e̶d̶ ̶i̶t̶, s̶h̶e̶d̶e̶s̶e̶r̶v̶e̶d̶i̶t̶-̶
However, she endured the tightening grip and inhaled shallowly but exhaled sharply, nearly losing her concentration at an immediate and abrupt pain jostling her awkwardly tumultuous thoughts about.
Just as suddenly, a stifling warmth engulfed her in a reassuring embrace, a tenacious voice ringing in her ears, softly promising—
"Y̶o̶u̶ ̶a̶r̶e̶ ̶m̶o̶r̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶a̶n̶ ̶e̶n̶o̶u̶g̶h̶, ̶P̶r̶i̶n̶c̶e̶s̶s̶ ̶Z̶e̶l̶d̶a̶."
Malice hastily retreated from her as if brutally scorned and burned, a hopeful light bursting from her raw fingertips from the complex depths of her very soul.
Distantly, a roar resounded off the inner chambers of her gloomy jail.
No longer scared, a soothing tide of calmness washed over her, erasing each negative concern hounding after her like a rabid pack looking to gnaw at the bare bones of her imminent defeat.
She would wait— months, years, centuries —here in the middle of a brewing calamity, for that single occasion where she could look upon them again and return that comforting embrace.
And so, she unknowingly closed her eyes so another pair could open...
