RIKKI

"Well, I think we should as for some type of cleaner so we can clean this place up," said Adam as he scrunched his eyebrows in thought.

"Good idea," I replied. "We should ask for band aids, rags, rubbing alcohol, and a broom. What else? We can ask for six more things."

"Um, how about a flashlight? That way if the power goes out we will still have light," said Adam.

"Nice idea. I think we should also ask for batteries and clean sheets."

"Okay, that makes nine things. We can ask for one more thing. I think we should ask for duct tape. You never know when it will come in handy," I said.

"Good idea! I think we can probably use it to fix some of the spaces in the walls," said Adam excitedly.

"Awesome, now when those bozos come back we can tell them what we want. I'm not sure if they'll stay true to what they said, but even if we get one of those things, we will be okay. And, Adam, no matter what we cannot lose our heads. We have to stay calm and positive. If we don't, we are as good as dead. I don't mean to scare you, but it's the truth. I am determined that, no matter what, we will make it out of here alive and sane."

"Whoa, man, that was deep. I hear what you're saying. I won't lose my head," said Adam sincerely.

"I know you'll try not to, but I'm pretty sure that these guys are going to torture us. They'll do whatever it takes for us to lose it. These men are pure evil. We might be here for a long time so just try to think happy thoughts, okay?"

"Okay," chirped Adam without a second thought. Little kids are way too innocent. Then the door of the bunkhouse opened and in came the men.

"Have you brats decided what you're gonna ask for? Remember, if you ask for something I don't like, I'll shoot ya," said Jacque. I could tell the guy was stupid just by the way he talked.

"We would like to humbly ask you for rubbing alcohol, rags, band aids, a broom, batteries, a flashlight, clean sheets, clean clothes for each of us, and duct tape," I said timidly, trying not to make the men mad.

"Ooo, we would like to humbly ask you for these things," said Jase in a mocking voice. "Princess over here has a big vocabulary. Just for that, we're gonna give you half of the things you asked for. Just be glad we're still letting you have some decision in what we provide you with. Happy sleeping!" Jase chirped as he and Jacque left the bunkhouse.

"Oh!" I said angrily. "Those pieces of..."

"Rikki, calm down. They're trying to mess with your head. Maybe we should see if we can just run away through the door. I didn't hear them lock it," said Adam.

"Great idea, Adam. Stay behind me and I'll open the door first in case there's some kind of trap out there." I went up to the rotting wooden door and opened it up a crack.

Outside the door was the hugest dog I'd ever seen. It was a brown Great Dane with black patches. The Great Dane had to be at least three and a half feet tall and five feet long! That puppy was huge! It also didn't look very friendly. As soon as the dog saw me, it growled and leaped at the door!

"Aaaaa!" I screamed as I slammed the door shut and fell on my butt. If I had waited a second more, Adam and I would've been dog chow!

"What was out there Rikki?" asked Adam in a spooked voice.

"It-it was a h-huge Great Dane! The men put it out there to keep us from escaping. That puppy is giant! There is no way we're going to escape with that monster out there!" I moaned hopelessly as I picked myself up off of the floor.

"Rikki, it's okay. We'll find some way out, but we won't be able to do it tonight. We'd better get to sleep. Can I have the top bunk?"

"Yes, Adam, you can have the top bunk. I'm amazed that you're actually the one suggesting we go to sleep for once. You usually have to be dragged to bed. See you in the morning," I said with a smile as I climbed into my dusty bed.

"Eww," said Adam in a disgusted voice. "My bed is all dusty."

"Mine is too," I replied. "Don't worry. We'll clean up in the morning."

"Okay. Rikki?"

"Yes, Adam?"

"I'm scared. I miss Mom and Dad. I also miss Hilda and Mason and the rest of the staff," said Adam.

"I miss Mom, Dad, Hilda, Mason, and the others, too, buddy. Don't worry, we'll see them again. I'll make sure of it. You don't have to worry. I'll take care of you. Good night."

"'Night, Rikki," replied Adam with a yawn.

"Adam," I said.

"Yeah, Rikki?" he replied sleepily.

"Come to think of it, the Great Dane kind-of looked like Scooby-Doo," I said with a laugh.

"Really?"

"Yeah, he was brown with black patches. I think he even had a teal collar."

"That's funny."

After a few minutes, I could hear Adam's gentle snores. I was worried about a lot of things. I was worried about Adam's and my safety. I was worried about what the men were going to do to us. I was worried about Mason, Hilda, William, and Mildred, our maid. I was worried about my mom and dad.

"What am I going to do?" I thought to myself. "I have to help Adam the best that I can and I have to stay strong for him, too."

Then I decided it was useless worrying about everything that night so I went into a restless sleep full of nightmares about everything from the men torturing me to Adam dying from a dog biting him. It was going to be a long night.
