A Normal Phenomenon

Lana

Even though I forgot that Benny was going to Wisconsin today, he reminded me when he showed up at my house and asked my mother if he could take me out to lunch. Mom agreed, but the whole time in the restaurant it felt awkward because one of the security guards followed us. He was just doing his job even if it was to act as a bouncer at a fancy restaurant in the city.

"So, are you packed?" I asked and poked the enormous brownie and ice cream we decided to share because the lunch we ordered were significant portions.

"Yeah, yesterday after the cottage I went home and packed." He replied then shrugged. "I'm not in the mood to go."

"I forgot that you were even going," I mumbled as I avoided eye contact and slowly ate the brownie.

"Yeah me too, Lana," Benny said then slightly nudged his spork against mine. I looked up to see a small smile appear on his lips. "I'll count down the days until I see you again."

I couldn't help but smile and playfully shake my head as I took another piece. Before I ate, I stared into his dark brown eyes to which he smiled. "Oh, Benny Nielson, I'll think of you day and night."

That seemed to permanently keep the smile on his face as we continued to eat. I'd miss Benny because it got boring at home, all I did was stare at the wall and wait until someone picked me up or moved me somewhere. I didn't have a phone, so I often read or listened to music, even though I enjoyed it, I needed something to happen. I wanted action.

Ever since the fire nothing happened. Literally, nothing because no one told me anything. I wanted to ask Benny about Christo because this morning before dad left for the station, Detective Kale showed up and questioned me.

I glanced at Benny who seemed to enjoy the ice cream as his eyes drooped but once he noticed me, his cheeks reddened. I would've smiled or said something, but all I thought about was the dead body. All I knew was that they had Christo's corpse and that Marcus was with Mike and James.

"What's been going on lately?" I blurted out and put down my spork. Benny raised a brow to which I sighed and glanced around the room. My security guard who hadn't shared a word with me from day one stood by the entrance but had his back turned to us. I turned back to Benny and leaned in, and so did he. "With the whole Christo, James thing?"

I knew Benny knew something because he leaned back in his seat and casually wiped the corners of his mouth. When he did that, I thought he got ready to tell me, but he didn't respond. "Come on Benny, no one's telling me anything. Detective Kale stopped by this morning and the information I told him must've been old because he didn't seem surprised at all."
