Chapter 7

Mallory's POV

Without a second thought, I broke out running. I slipped past Kane and bolted down the hallway. I skidded around the corner, only to bump into another person. I stumbled back slightly, raising my eyes. An average looking man stared down at me in shock, his eyes wide. Without apologizing, I took off around him again. I had to be fast. I flew down the stairs, almost falling at least three times. The door was just in my reach when I heard it; the shout.

"Alpha, she's escaping! That Alpha female is escaping!" I twisted to see the man I had ran into at the top of the stairs, pointing down at me. I heard heavy footfalls from above but didn't stick around long enough for Damien to see me. I slipped through the door and bolted across the lawn. Now I was faced with a new challenge; which way to go? Everywhere I looked it was trees, trees, and more trees. The house was surrounded by a forest. Hearing shouts coming from the inside of the house, I randomly started running in a direction. I quickly crashed into the trees, the thick, dense forest darkening my perspective. I didn't slow, staring at the ground as I ran to avoid tripping over something. Trees were whipping against my face and pulling my hair but I didn't let that slow me. It was silent as I made my way deeper into the forest, the quiet only broken by a twig snapping beneath my feet or my breathing.

After a good ten minutes of all out running, I was dying for a break. Stumbling past the last few trees into a clearing, I dropped to the ground, pulling my knees to my chest and resting my head on them. As my breathing and heart rate slowed, I raised my head to look around. Not only did I not know where I was, but it didn't seem that I was anywhere near civilization. My neck had started throbbing a while back and the pain was even more pronounced. It didn't miss my attention that the pain was the strongest where Damien had bitten me. Stupid mark; I didn't worry too much. Kane said it would go away. I rubbed at it and grumbled irritably as I stood, preparing to start off again. Knowing I could go anywhere but back, I started forwards once again.

A rumble started above me and I looked up. Through the thick branches, I could just make out the thick clouds above me. As I stared up, a drop of rain landed square on my forehead. I blinked and looked down. Great, a storm was coming and I was stuck outside. With a sigh of annoyance, I started forwards. Five minutes had passed and I was already soaked; the rain had come out of nowhere, going from a drizzle to a drench in five seconds flat. I was now trudging through the trees, my hair clinging to my face and my clothes dragging me down. I was also freezing, my teeth chattering as I hugged myself. A tremendous boom sounded above me just after lighting flashed; fantastic, now I had the possibility of getting stuck by lightening. Grumbling some choice curse words, I yanked my foot out of some mud. The only shoes I had been able to find in Damien's room were some flip-flops... so I might as well have gone barefoot. Actually, I had lost the left shoe a couple minutes back, so I was half-bare foot.

Pushing my hair out of my face, I kicked off my right shoe and started walking even more. After another ten minutes of trudging through mud, falling in mud, and getting bitten by unknown insects, I collapsed onto the forest floor. God, could the odds be anymore against me. Curling up into a ball, I hugged myself in hopes of gathering more heat. A rumble that had nothing to do with thunder started in front of me and circled around me. I sat up instantly, looking around me with wide eyes.

The sound started once again and it almost sounded like... growls? I stood up shakily just as two green eyes peered at me through the trees. I choked out a gasp, stumbling back. I backed right into a bare chest and an arm around my waist instantly tapped me. I knew from instinct that this wasn't Damien; and I was in trouble. I attempted to jerk away but was slammed back. I felt a finger trail down my neck. A second later, I heard and felt someone inhale near my neck, then chuckle.
