Fletch cleared his throat
"Everything ok" he asked serving the omelette and salad.
"Yes she's having a great time at the park playing hide and seek" Jac smiled
"That is something I don't see nearly enough of" said Fletch sitting down
"What?"
"Your smile"
Jac snorted "soppy git. Anyway my smiles are reserved for very special people" she smiled again
"I hope I'm one of them"
"You know that you're special to me Fletch even I'm not that good at hiding stuff"
"Well I guess we do work well together and I thought we were close until I found out all the stuff you've been hiding from me"
"Fletch I'm sorry. I've tried to explain why"
"Yeah yeah so I didn't get hurt, you cared too much blah blah"
"Don't be like that Fletch. I did what I thought was best" Jac said in a shaky voice
"I know" he said more softly "but what you did hurt me more"
Jac took a sip of her wine and stared at him with big mournful eyes brimming with tears
" just" he said putting a hand on her forearm "don't do it again"
She nodded
Fletch sat back. "You know, I had only met you a handful of times before I got based on Darwin. Your reputation though went before you. On the occasional times times that you were called down to the ED for a cardio consult everyone spoke in hushed tones hoping that you didn't notice them. You were like a fiery tornado ripping through the department. I was impressed that Connie Beauchamp had met her match"
Jac laughed
"I've been through my fair share of relationship disasters. Some of which involved me being a complete bastard and I've been left heartbroken too but it hasn't shaken my belief in love. The night my wife died I had all the kids in one bed at her house - you knew we weren't together by the time she had Theo right?"
Jac nodded
"I vowed to myself then that I would give them a good life. No more womanising" Fletch cringed. He noticed Jac's raised eyebrow
"Hey from what I hear you've hardly been a saint over the past few years" he huffed
"Fair comment Fletcher" Jac guffawed which made Fletch laugh too and then they weren't laughing at that. Just laughing. Until there were tears rolling down both their cheeks
"I love this Jac. And I love you"
