SAM AND DEAN HAD once again left me with Bobby, this time to deal with some girl who the demons wanted. This was apparently super dangerous, and they didn’t want me getting involved. “So, why do they want her?” I ask Sam over the phone, he and Dean are still trying to figure out her significance.
“Not sure, but it’s like a first-come first-serve kind of thing between the demons and the angels. Whoever she is, she’s important.” Sam tells me.
“And once again, you’re in the middle of it all?” I ask, but already fully know the answer.
“Yeah, but we need to protect her.” Sam says to me. I nod, even though he can’t see me.
“What’s special about her?” I ask him. I hear him sigh on the other end.
“She can hear the angels speak.” Sam says.
I widen my eyes and stand up from my chair. “Could I be like her? I can do it sometimes too.” I tell him.
“No, this is different, the angels don’t hate you like they hate her.” Sam says to me.
“I can help you know.” I offer, knowing he could use my help.
“No, Rowan, this is dangerous, and you aren’t experienced. Dean and I don’t want you getting in the middle of this because you could get hurt, or die, like what almost happened last time.” Sam says.
I inhale slowly, trying my best to hide my frustration. “Okay. I’ll see you when you get back. Call if you need me.” I say.
“Bye, Row.” Sam says before hanging up. I throw myself back onto the chair I was sitting in, much like a toddler having a temper tantrum.
“Hey, kid, I gotta go. Will you be fine here?” Bobby asks me as he enters the lounge area.
“Where are you going?” I ask him, sitting up properly.
“Got called in for backup, got some hunters up in Mississauga that need some help.” He says to me.
I smile. “I can help.” I say enthusiastically, scrambling to get up.
Bobby shakes his head. “Sorry kid, there are some real bad things being dealt with down there and I can’t have you getting in the middle.” Bobby says. I furrow my eyebrows, this is the second time someone has told me they don’t want me getting in the middle.
I scoff, realizing what this seemingly harmless statement meant. “You don’t want me getting in the middle…or getting in the way?” I ask sharply. Bobby frowns.
“Listen, I don’t want you getting hurt. This life is dangerous, especially for someone so inexperienced.” He tries to reason with me.
“So all that talk about me being able to do this was just bullshit?” I ask rudely.
“Girl, there are many different things you can do with your life. If you wanna be a hunter, then go for it. Just, don’t expect to be welcomed into the big jobs before you done the small ones. You need experience.” Bobby tells me.
“So I get stabbed once and suddenly I’m on island of the inexperience? Sam, Dean, and you were perfectly fine with me hunting right up until that case a few days ago. What changed?” I yell.
“We realized how much danger you’re in. You’ve lived a sheltered life, away from all this. Did you think being a hunter would be easy? Rowan, the boys don’t want you hunting because they don’t want to lose you.” He says to me.
I shake my head. “That’s not fair.” I tell him.
“I never said it was.” He says and then walks out of the door, leaving me alone and once again frustrated.
“Ugh!” I scream, knocking some books off the desk onto the floor.
“I don’t think Bobby would be very pleased with your actions.” I hear a familiar, gruff voice say from across the room.
“What? Come to tell me I can’t hunt too?” I ask.
Castiel gives me a confused look. “I’ve come to ask you a favour.” Cas says to me.
“Oh, this should be good.” I say.
“If someone ever asks you to invite them in, say ‘no’.” Cas says to me.
“That’s the favour? What does that even mean?” I ask him.
“Angels and Lucifer alike need permission before inhabiting a vessel, such as yourself. If the time ever arises where you’re asked to invite an angel in, don’t ever say ‘yes’.” I nod my head.
“Okay.” I say.
We are left in a comfortable silence before I break it. “You can repay your favour to me now.” I tell him.
“And what would it be?” He asks.
“Teach me to fight.” I tell him. I walk over to him.
“What do you mean?” He asks me.
“Like fighting, you know, combat and stuff, so that they’ll let me hunt.” I say.
Cas nods. “Alright, we should probably go outside.” He says. I nod.

“Okay, now just try and hit me, I’ll assess how much you’ve learned.” Cas says to me. I nod, and get in the stance he taught me a few minutes prior. On his head nod, my attempt to take him down begins.
I step towards him, my left foot leading my right. After a moment, I swing at his head, and miss by a lot. “That was a very bad first attempt.” He says to me.
I shake my head. “To be fair you’re an angel and literally are inhuman.” I say.
“To be fair so are you.” Castiel says, referencing the weird thing I do to demons.
“Have we figured that out yet?” I ask, throwing a few more punches his way, all of them being dodged.
“No, I, have not figured it out. I do want to know if you can be of any assistance in this war though.” He says.
“So you can use me?” I ask, trying to kick him, and then dodging a punch he threw at me.
“Potentially, so I now I need to protect you from those who do.” He says to me.
We make eye contact at his words. I see his stance falter, after saying he needed to protect me. I took this opportunity to punch him in the face and kick his feet out from underneath him. Castiel grunts as he hits the ground in front of Bobby’s house.
“Why do you think you need to protect me?” I ask as he gets up, dusting some dirt off of himself.
“Because, you’re a Winchester.” He says.
I shake my head. “That’s not a good reason.” I say.
I break my stance. “Well, you can take it or leave it.” Cas says and grabs my fist, stopping me from hitting him. He pulls me towards him and leans into my ear. “If you want to hunt with your brothers, show them you can.” He says and begins walking away.
I shudder at his proximity, feeling cold when he leaves. “Wait! How do I show them?” I ask.
“I’ll let you know the next time they don’t let you come.” He says to me. I nod my head and watch as he leaves, knowing that he’s looking out for me, even if only in his own way. I look down at my hands and notice their redness and how some of my knuckles are cut. Something feels off.
