●●●“I CAN'T DO THIS.” I say, staring at the ceiling of the 1967 Chevrolet Impala. I sigh.
“Can’t do what?” Dean ask me, clearly worried for my imminent safety. “Eat the burger?” Okay, not for my safety, for his hunger. “I mean, I’ll eat it if you don’t want it.”
I scoff jokingly and pick up the wrapper containing the burger we got an hour ago and I lean forward, passing it to Dean. “Have at it, but, that isn’t what I meant.” I explain.
“Okay, well, what did you mean?” Sam asks me, furrowing his eyebrows as he watches Dean eats his third cheeseburger.
“I need a break. From all of this. I don’t know how you do it- I just…I need to recuperate. A day. I just want a day.” I stare at the floor, expecting them to deny me this request.
“Sure, I mean, if Sam can take a break, you can too.” Dean jokes.
“That’s the thing. Where would I take a break? I have nothing- no one, if I’m not with you.” I say, frustrated at my life, or lack thereof.
“Uh, well, you have Bobby, an-and Cas.” Sam says, listing off the very short list of my contacts.
“Oh, yes! Cas! Are you two still half-ass flirting?” Dean asks me, wearing an amused smirk on his greasy, burger-face. I widen my eyes and look down, attempting to cover the very prominent blush on my face. “Y-yep, they’re still half-ass flirting.” He acknowledges my uncomfortable state. “Why don’t you call Cas?”
“We aren’t flirting! That isn’t what’s going on.” I deny. “And I’m not calling Cas for a leisure day when the world is ending. He doesn’t have time for that and for me to distract him would be selfish.”
“Oh, because selfish is so far off the Winchester name.” Dean says sarcastically.
“Do you not have any friends from Topeka?” Sam asks me, once again being the only logical thinker of us three.
“One.” I say, remembering Myra, my best friend. “But I practically abandoned her when I left with you two. Besides, I’m sure she’s at art school by now. The summer’s over.”
“Yeah, you’re screwed.” Dean says.
“Okay, what about Bobby?” Sam asks me.
“He’s crippled and therefore so much grouchier than usual. My snarkiness is only going to make him kill me. There is nothing leisure about him, except for the fact that he can’t walk.” I complain.
“I’d high-five you for the cripple jokes but the disdain from Sam would bury me alive.” Dean says smiling. We make eye contact through the front-view mirror.
“I think I might go to Topeka. Maybe Myra hasn’t left yet, or is by chance visiting.” I say hopefully.
“We have a case, Row!” Dean complains.
