She pushed Madelaine back onto her haunches.

"You're not. I swear to god."

"So, baby?"

"You're not doing this right now. I can't believe it. Of course I'm not going to say no. I love you too much. Yes."

Madelaine stood up and put the ring on, then kissed her, holding her to her chest when she broke away.

"Is this why you didn't take me here before tonight?"

"Yes, I wanted it to be special."

"This certainly was special."

"Fuck, we're getting married. Vanessa, we're getting married."

"I know. I'm so fucking in love with you."

"I'm more in love with you."

"Fuck off that's not possible."

Madelaine giggled and held her flush against her chest.

"Once we're married we're getting a dog and a child."

"Calm down there Vanessa, we're only 21. We've got our whole lives together."

"Is it bad I really want a puppy now? Yoshi needs a friend."

"Patience grasshopper."

"Please?" She dragged it out.

"Really? You really want to go get a dog right now?"

"Yes!"

Madelaine rolled her eyes.

"It's almost midnight. Can we even have dogs in our hotel room?"

Vanessa made a shushing sound and started turning around.

"Vanessa."

"C'mon! We're engaged now. We're 21. We're wild."

"Fine. How are we supposed to get this dog back to Vancouver though?"

"I know! We get a rental car and drive back!"

"Nessa, I love you, but that's almost 40 hours to drive."

"So? We get a hotel room when we need it. Don't crush my hopes."

Madelaine sighed. "Fine. Find a shelter and we'll go."

"There's one a few blocks from our hotel. Call an Uber."

Madelaine did what Vanessa told her. The Uber arrived and Vanessa bounced around in the backseat the entire ride there.

"I can't believe we're doing this," Madelaine laughed as they started into the shelter.

"Puppies!"

"Good lord."

Vanessa ran to a group of cages with puppies in them.

"They're all so cute!"

"We're getting one dog Vanessa."

"I know."

"Oh, he's cute." Madelaine pointed to a brown miniature poodle alone in a cage.

"Ooh, whats his name?"

"Oh, his name is Milo."

"I want him!"

An employee came up to them.

"Sorry to eavesdrop, I hear you're interested in Milo." She was obviously trying to stay calm, she had recognized them.

"Yeah. We really like him."

"I'm so sorry, can I get a photo with you two?"

Both girls smiled and nodded. They took several photos with the girl, then went through the process of buying Milo. When they finally got to another Uber with all their shit, and precious Milo, they posed for photos, posting a couple on Instagram.

The Uber dropped them off, but they spent a few minutes contemplating how to get Milo inside. Finally Vanessa hid him in her purse and they snuck inside. Luckily they avoided anyone calling them out. As soon as they got to their room, he was running around and wagging his tail eagerly. Each girl had already fallen in love him.

"We're a family of four now." Madelaine heard while she drifted off, clutching Milo in between her and Vanessa.

Madelaine couldn't ever imagine herself with anyone else. Especially not Travis. Nobody would ever come between them, ever.
