at the edge of the cliff

chapter eleven: lost voices and poor choices

I walked away from her and kept walking until I reached my car a couple streets over. Not once looking back. I didn't know who that guy was, but he was obviously the reason she went all psycho on me. He said something about a probation officer. Does she have a probation officer? Meaning that she was on probation? And then the thing about her mom...that seemed to hit a nerve. Or maybe it was what he said about her dad. It is obvious to me now that it was her dad who beat her like that, even though I already had my suspicious. But all I did was try to help her. But fuck her if she doesn't want my help. I will still sleep the same tonight.

Actually I probably won't.

She never leaves my mind and it's starting to get annoying.

I start to drive to the only place I knew. I sure as hell was not going home. Today is my dads off day and it's Friday so I'm never home on the weekends anyway so they won't think anything of it. I haven't been able to stay at home for such a long time I wouldn't even call it home anymore. With Will gone it doesn't feel like home anymore.

I don't really feel anything anymore.

But one place that has become sort of a home for me is the cliff. Well, up until that one day Shay was there the same day. And ever since then all of the times I went back she was there too. But that's the only place I know to go right now.

I internally groaned when I heard someone talking. A girl in particular. Why didn't it even cross my mind that she might be here? I peeked around a tree to see her on the phone.

"I don't need anything from you!" She shouts into the phone. I could tell she had been crying and part of me felt bad. But I stayed there and kept listening. "Fuck you!" She yells throwing the phone, it landing somewhere in the grass. Her cries was barely audible from how much she has lost her voice from screaming today. She paces back and forth along the edge of the cliff. That brought back some memories from no so long ago. She stopped closer to the right of the cliff and peers over. My eyes go wide when I realize what's happening but I wasn't fast enough. By the time I got to the edge I saw her hit the rocks and then flip into the water. I stood dazed, my mouth agape, my heart racing. Without wasting any more time, I took out my phone and called 911 and told them where we were. Then I jumped in where it was safe and swam as fast as i could looking for her. So much adrenaline was pumping through me, I didn't even feel how cold the water was. I took a breath and sank down into the water looking for Shay. Her dark hair was the only thing I could make out as it was sinking down. I reached out as far as I could and that was just enough to grab her hair and pull her up. Her face was covered in blood and almost completely blue. I coughed as I pulled her to the shore. I put my head to her chest and seen that she was still breathing. Sirens brought my attention back to earth and I looked around to see an ambulance racing our way. I looked down at her one last time.

"I'm sorry." And with that I was gone. I ran as fast a I could away from the scene. I couldn't be there if she woke up. When she wakes up. I don't know why I ran but I did know she couldn't know I saved her. If I saved her. She wanted me out of her life and not interfering and i'm pretty sure saving her life was interfering.

But I couldn't just let her do that to herself. I couldn't live with that.

Plus as much as I hate to admit it, I don't want her gone.

I didn't run that far away from the scene because I found myself sitting on the edge of the cliff watching the paramedics surrounding Shay. I came to my feet when she sprang up and was coughing. She looked around confused but for some reason she looked up. Her eyes locked with mine and then she was put inside the ambulance.

I'm not even going to lie, I was relieved that she woke up.

Very, very relieved.
