Chapter 2

The moon was full and high in the sky when I stopped running. I was flat out exhausted. I found a large tree with a hole at the base and crawled in. I had to scare out a family of raccoons, but I was not going to lay out in the open to be seen. I tried figuring out how long I had been running. 12 hours at least. As soon as I put my head down, I fell asleep in my wolf form.

~Nate’s POV~

“Nate, Nate honey, the dogs are going nuts again. Will you go and make sure that nothing got out of their pens?” I heard my mother calling from her bedroom. I grunted as I got out of bed and slipped on a pair of shorts and my sandals.

“Yeah Ma, I’ll go look.”

I grabbed a flashlight and my shotgun. Living out in the middle of nowhere left you open to all sorts of visitors of the animal kind. Making my way out of the front door, I watched the dogs as they barked towards the woods behind the house.

“Damn dogs.” I got closer to them and tried to get them to quiet down. I had to be up in about three hours to start chores. Holding the shotgun down toward the ground, I moved slowly and shined the flashlight everywhere. I heard a branch snap and turned around; to my relief it was only a deer.

“Stupid dogs get me up in the middle of the night for a damn deer?”

I turned around and nearly tripped. I was near the old oak tree I use to play in when I was younger, the bottom was hollowed out and the roots were going everywhere above the ground. I caught myself and the flashlight shined inside.

“What the hell?” I was shocked to say the least. Inside the tree trunk was a woman, a naked woman. I squatted down and looked at her face. She could not have been more than 20 and she had bruises on her upper arms.

“What happened to you?” She didn’t move and I was afraid that she might be dead. But with the cool night air, I could see her breath. She was alive. I laid down the gun and carefully picked her up. She was so light and thin, but muscular at the same time.

I walked as slow as I could back to the large farm house with her safe in my arms. As we went past the dogs, they both started growling at her. I thought that to be very weird.

I walked back up the stairs and opened the screen as best I could without jostling her around. We have a spare bedroom upstairs, so I took her to it. I heard my mother’s bedroom door open. She looked at me holding the woman with questions written all over her face.

“Nate honey, what is going on here?” She asked in a whispering voice.

“I found her in the woods like this in the old oak tree; she has not woken up at all. I’m going to call for Doc Tanner in the morning.” My mother opened the spare bedrooms door and I carried her in. She moved the bedspread down and I laid her onto the bed. Covering her back up I went and got a chair from the dining room and put it next to her bed. I stayed with her all night and when I had to go out to the barn and do my work, my mom sat with her.

The auburn haired beauty slept for almost two days. Doc Tanner came and checked her out. She was malnourished, thin, dehydrated and her hands and feet were badly cut up. The thing that threw me the most was a scar on her shoulder that appeared to be a bite mark. There was not a time that someone was not sitting with her.
