"Your distracting me." I chuckled.
"I'm just asking questions." Paul smiled, looking at me from across his kitchen table.
"Fine." I smiled back.
"Are you mixed?"
"Why do you ask?"
"Your last name is Lopez..but-"
"But I'm blacker than you.." I finished, chuckling.
He nodded and smiled. "Yeah. I'm just curious."
"Well, I was adopted when I was a newborn. My parents are Hispanic and even though I'm black, I'm apart of the Spanish heritage that my parents taught me. I speak fluent Spanish, I eat Spanish food, love Spanish music, my abuela is crazy, lovable but crazy."
He nodded with a smile. "That's amazing."
"I know." I nodded. I was proud of my Spanish background, just as proud as I was of my African-American background.
"Say something in Spanish."
"Deberíamos estar haciendo esta tarea de matemáticas."
"That means?"
"We should be doing this math homework."
"Fine Fine. Next math question Ms. Lopez."
"Okay." He nodded, sitting up. "Teach away,"
"Okay, so if you have all the sides of a triangle, what law would you use, law of sines or law of cosines?"
He looked at the problem, looking uncertain. "Law of...cosine?"
"Yes!"
He smiled and nodded, writing out the equation.
"Now just plug everything you have in, except for the cos of the angle your trying to find."
He nodded, taking his time to plug everything in and calculate it. He finally got the answer and looked back up. "Is angle<A 42 degrees?"
I nodded with a proud smile. "Correct! Your coming a long way George."
He smiled. "Well, I have a great tutor to thank for that."
