Maya's POV

Another weekday, another day of school, another day of listening Mr. Matthews history lesson. There's something weird though, there's a pretty present on his desk, why?
"Ancient Greece--" I see that Riley notices is as well
"What that? What that that?" she asks with enthusiasm
"What thi-this?" her father points to it
"This is a present"
"Is it for me?" this is too suspicious
"What's your game, Matthews?"
"Game? I mean no game. I just want to know who here wants this present" everyone raises their hands exception me, I'm no fool.
"Oh, Maya, what? You assume by playing hard to get, I'm gonna give it to you?"
"Well, yes. That's one of the many arrows in my quiver"
"Riley" he gives her the box and she opens it happily just to find herself disappointed
"The Trojan horse?"
"Surprise"
"This isn't a present. This is one of your life lessons wrapped up in a class lesson wrapped up in a box of nothing"
"How you doing, honey?" I ask her, this must be really hard for her
I'm all worked up.
"I know"
"You assumed because it was all neat and pretty that something good was inside. Ancient Troy was protected by walls. The Greeks couldn't get in, so they built a big wooden horse and left it behind. What do you think the Trojans did?"
"They left it there because they were afraid that somebody was trying to teach them something"
They captured it as a trophy and brought it inside. That night, the Greek soldiers crawled out of the horse and defeated Troy. What have we learned here? Mr. Friar"
"Don't make assumptions based on what you see?" why is he so smart?!
"Riley, listen, I'm sorry I made an example of you. So here's a gift for you"
"Ooh-- No! I want to-- No! Pretty ribbon-- No!"
"I'll take my chances with that, sir"
"No, Lucas. You have to assume it was no good because the first one was no good. Aren't you all proud of me, dad?"
"No!" well, now I'm just confused
"Get out of detention free" What did Huckleberry just said?! I turn around
"Ooh, I could use one of those. Gimme that and I won't call you 'Ranger Rick' all week"
"Here you go" I take the card
"Thanks, Ranger Roy"
"Lemme guess. Ranger Roy is filling in for Ranger Rick?"
"All week. And now... you"
"Oh, is something gonna happen to me?"
"Yes, it is" I say with a smirk before standing up on his desk and dancing on it for a while.
"A d-d-d-d, a d-d-d-d-a d-d-d-detention. But not today. Boom!"
"Read the card" I frowns
"Huh?"
"Card" I read it out loud
"Say 'get out of detention free' then give worthless card to Maya then watch her dance on my desk" great, now I have detention. I get back on my seat
"Never assume. Look more deeply. Just because something is wrapped up all pretty, doesn't always mean it is" I turn around to face the cowboy
"You were in on this!"
"I'm Ranger Roy and I'll be here all week" he tips  an imaginary hat, making me shudder  and turn away
"Oh-ho-ho" there's going to be one less cowboy in town very soon.
After this first period we head to the gym where the interscholastic debate is held and Farkle is participating as usual. We take our seats as he starts talking but I get bored immediately and start talking to Elliot since he's sitting next to me, holding my hand. You know, for the act of the couple.
"You good?" I nod
"I'm okay"
"You sure?" I frown
"You don't think I know how I'm feeling?"
"I think you know that I know how you're feeling but refuse to believe it so you try to confuse me so that I no longer know how you're feeling and you're the only one who knows"
"That was very...philosophical" he chuckles
"Thanks" I notice that Mr. Matthews keeps looking at us so I retract the hand Elliot was holding and put it on the edge of the chair
"What's wrong?"
"Your dad, I think he knows something" he glances over him
"Come on Maya, it's him. He will never notice"
"Don't underestimate him. Let's just not hold hands for now" he nods
"Okay" after that we keep listening to Farkle for a few minutes until I feel a warm feeling over my hand
"Elliot" I say, still looking at Farkle
"What?" he interweaves our fingers and starts gently rubbing my palm with his thumb, making me blush
"Your dad-"
"He's not looking at us anymore, plus, our hands are pretty hidden now that we're not holding them up like before"
"Fine" he looks at me and slightly laughs
"Why are you laughing?"
"Because you're so adorable when you are nervous"
"I'm not nervous"
"Keep telling yourself that...oh my gosh are you blushing?!"
"What-No!"
"Yes!"
"No!"
"Woah, you're blushing harder!" he pokes my cheeks
"Stop it!"
"Never!"
"Hey, will you stop making all this noise? I'm actually trying to listen to what our friend is saying" Lucas says to us in a very annoyed tone
"Geez, sorry moral compass, we'll stay quiet" he smiles at me, making me smile as well
"Thanks" I turn around to look at Farkle
"Maya Hart being tamed by a cowboy, I need to write that down" Elliot whispers with sarcasm
"I'm not tamed. I wanna listen to Farkle as well"
"Okay, whatever" what is wrong with him? Why did he change his mood so drastically? I shrug it off, nothing serious I guess.
"...in conclusion, school uniforms reduce individuality which will be unnecessary in the real world when you're all working for me. Thank you. I am Farkle!"
"I don't understand debate" my best friend says to me, do I really have to explain it to her? Nope.
"I say you do"
"Okay" Good girl
"I like debate-- exploring two sides of the same thing-- good and bad, light and dark, right in front of you at the same time. Where else are you gonna get that? Oh, right here. Look at you" Ranger Rick adds while pointing at both of us
"And now from Einstein academy" Mr. Matthews reads the paper
"Undefeated this season, 72 pounds of raw intellectual power! She is who your mama wishes she gave birth to! The one, the only... Smackle!" right then a girl gets out, does some moves and walks toward Farkle
"You goin' down, chump" she gets the microphone
"Wearing a uniform makes you surrender to conformity and sacrifices uniqueness, which is our most valuable freedom. Don't let anybody tell you what to wear. Don't let anybody tell you what to be. Smackle, the one and only, out"
"Well, before I announce the winner, let me remind you all that our final debate of the season will be held right here next week, where our thought-provoking topic will be 'Is beauty only skin deep?' So the winner of today's debate is... Isadora Smackle, Einstein academy" Damn, that must be hard for Farkle, another defeat.
"I gotta go now, bye" Elliot says to me
"Bye" he kisses my cheek and leaves.
"It looks like our debate team could use some help"
"Yeah, Smackle's definitely got game"
"She beats Farkle every time. You think he's gotten used to it by now?" we turn around to look at him, he's lying on the floor, groaning.
"It hurts"
"Nope. Good thing we're there for him. Being there for him is the most important thing we can be-" Oh! Are those melon balls? I'm hungry!
"Melon balls!"
"Ooh" Riley and I walk to the table and start eating them only to come back when we finish them all
"Well, Farkle, good job being smart and everything" Riley tells him as we approach him
"Thanks for coming, Riley. Sorry you had to see me lose again"
"Wonderful debate, Farkle. A memory that will live with me right up until the next thing happens" she hugs him before he goes away
"Well, Smackle, good job being smart and everything"
"I am sad"
"What?"
"Farkle and I are perfect for each other. Why does he prefer you?" maybe because we're not robots?
"I don't know. If I knew, I'd stop"
"Well, there's nothing left to do now but get a smoothie all alone and continue this good cry I'm having"
"You're crying?"
"Yes. A-wah A-wah"
"I don't think that's actually-"
"A-wah A-wah!" Riles, honey, you're being played
"Look, I am going to ask you something really fast and then I'm going to regret it. You wanna come to my house?" what?!
"Yes, I would like to come to your house. There is much I can learn from you" they try to hug
"Oh, no! I already have a weird friend" I say with a sigh, why does life have to be so cruel?
