I wake up with a huge headache. Damn, Missy's party last night was really lit. We've been partying for two weeks now and there's another party tonight. Can't wait for it! We always have lots of fun. Riley and others refuse to go though, they say that they have to focus on studies. Ugh, why can't they just have a little bit of fun every once in a while?
I groan in pain and hold my head for a few minutes until the headache calms down. At this point I grab my phone and realize that I'm late, very late. I quickly shower, get dressed, grab my backpack and climb through Riley's bay window. I really don't feel like having breakfast.
"Peaches!" she squeezes me as I try my best to remain chill, my head right now is pulsing. Even though Missy's parties are awesome I hate the hangover that I have in the morning.
"Riles" I reply with a smile.
Elliot opens the door and comes in
"Are you ready?" he asks with enthusiasm, making my head pulse again. Why is he so energetic today
"Yes" I reply, calm
"I didn't hear you! Are you ready?!"
"Why is he so energetic, Riley?"
"I just drank coffee!"
"That's great! Now shut up!" he frowns
"Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, I just have a headache"
"But you've been having them for the past two weeks, and it's always in the morning..."
his expression changes when he seems to realize something
"Riley, wait for me in the car" she smiles
"Oh, El. You know you can say everything in front of me. I'm her best friend"
"Yeah, but I need to talk to her, in private. This is really serious"
"Then why shouldn't I-"
"Just go in the car!" I stand up in rage. Nobody talks to Riley like that. Why is he so angry all of sudden?!
"You did not just talk to her like that!"
"Riley!"
"What's happening here?" Mr. and Ms. Matthews asks in a worried tone as they barge in the room
"I tell you what's happening here. I need to talk to Maya in private and I can't do that if everyone's here"
"Elliot..."
"Dad, it's serious. I need to talk to her"
"Is it something that requires our help?"
"Probably, it all depends on how our conversation goes" his mother nods
"Okay then. Riley, come out"
"But, mom-"
"Now" she sighs and walks out with her parents, who lock the door.
"You're hangover. Aren't you?" He asks as soon as everyone is out
"I-I don't know what you're talking about" I reply while crossing my arms over my chest, obviously denying the obvious.
"Oh, so you're telling that when you go at Missy's parties all alone with her you don't get drunk?"
"I...I-" he cuts me off. I can sense that he's totally mad right now
"Shit, Maya! You've been like this for the past two weeks?! Is this why your grades have dropped? Is this why you've been so distant to all of us? Is this why you always have that damn headache?!" I hiss at the pain I'm feeling right now
"Maya! Answer me!"
"Just shut up already!" I take a deep breath to calm myself down.
"Yes, I've been drinking. But it's fine"
"How is that fine?! You're a minor and don't even drink responsibly!"
"You used to do that too!"
"Exactly! I 'used' to! I stopped! God, I don't even dare to think about all of the other things you do at those parties" he runs his hands through his hair in frustration and I raise my eyebrows.
"Oh, you think that I go to sleep with every guy I meet now?" I feel my blood boiling.
"Well, I wouldn't be surprised if you did" I resist the urge to punch him right now
"Just because you caught me once while I was making out with another guy doesn't mean that I do that with everyone! And why do you care?! It's not like you're my boyfriend or something like that! You know where my actual boyfriend is?! He's back in Texas! He left me! He's gone!" Woah, I've never said those words out loud. Reality just hit me again, we're totally over.
"And you know what?! It's none of your business how I deal with my breakup!"
"Yes it is! It fucking is, Maya! Especially if you hurt yourself and your surroundings like that!"
"What are you talking about?!"
"Farkle and Smakle don't have someone to share their opinions and scientific observations to. Zay doesn't have anyone to joke with and Riley has been meaning to tell you that she kissed Missy the day of your birthday party but you've been so off and out of the loop to notice any changes in her, or Missy! Do you realize how selfish you're being right now?!" Riley kissed her crush? How haven't I noticed it? I quickly snap out of my thoughts
"I just broke up with my boyfriend! I loved him! We were together for a whole year and he left! You think I'm being selfish for finally doing something that makes me feel good?! Even for just a while?!" he steps closer to me
"During the parties you might feel better and forget about Lucas but in the morning reality always strikes you. He's gone, and you have to learn how to deal with it, 'cause this is not the right way. Got it?" he asks me in a whisper. I can still feel the rage on his tone. Right now our faces are just inches apart. I take a deep breath and connect our lips. Wow, I missed this feeling. He wraps his hands around my hips and starts kissing me back. We kiss for a while until he suddenly pulls away with a shocked expression.
"Oh my god what did I just do?!" I ask myself while pacing around the room, furiously. I ruined everything!
"Maya..."
"No! What I did was wrong! It was completely wrong!"
"I'm not a rebound. I don't wanna be your second choice" I sigh in frustration and sit back on the bay window
"I know. And you're not. I don't know why I kissed you. That was so stupid...did I ruin everything between us?"
"No" he sits next to me and wraps his arm around my shoulder
"Listen, I know why you did it"
"You know?" he nods
"Yeah, you just wanna get over Lucas as fast as possible. Maya, you need to acknowledge that he left. And that you can't replace him with anybody. I'm so sorry that I have to tell you this. He won't come back. Drinking and kissing me won't help you forget about him" I start crying
"I don't know how else I should cope with this" he hugs me
"It's fine. I'll help you, okay?" I keep sobbing
"I want things to go back the way they were before"
"Maya, things change"
"But I don't want them to" he gently strokes my hair
"I know, but it's necessary" he kisses my head
"Shall we go to school?" I slowly nod
"Okay then, let's go"
