Maya's POV

After last week's discussion between me and Elliot we decided to stay friends, I don't wanna trap him with me, he doesn't deserve it. We see each other when I come over and it's no longer embarrassing for some reason and I don't mind it at all. Talking about coming over, that's exactly what I am doing right now. Wait, is that Josh?! He's talking to one of his friends, meaning that he hasn't noticed me yet, perfect, I rush to the elevator and run into the Matthews apartment where I find them eating breakfast
"All right, weirdos. Listen up and listen up good. I got like a minute before he walks through the door"
"Who?" Elliot asks me
"Your Uncle Boing" Riley rolls her eyes
"Oh, Maya, you've got to get off of this"
"Nope. The reason he's not interested is because I've been playing it all wrong. See, my strategy of turning into a total nut job at the mere sight of him ain't working out as planned"
"Maya, it's nothing you're doing. It's the age difference" I frown
"Three years older. Your dad married your mom. He's like twenty years older"
"We're exactly the same age!" What?! It can't be true!
"What?"
"I just need to be cas'. How's this?" I sit on the bench and put my feet on the table but Ms. Matthews walks up to me with a sarcastic laugh
"Yeah, how's this?" she asks me before pushing them off. Geez, no need to be so rude
"Hey, family!" It's him! Play it casual Maya, don't mess this up. I twirl my hair
"Yeah, hi. I don't care" did that sound casual enough?
"My brother!"
"My brother!" him and Mr. Matthews hug, is it weird if he's gonna be my brother in law someday?
"So, Riley, Elliot shouldn't we be like heading to school now, since there's nothing here for me of any interest?" we stand up
"Sure. Let's go"
"I came up here because I wanted to do this in front of all of you. I hold in my hand an envelope from New York University" Oh, I feel like this is gonna be a big moment for him, I better be present. I stop walking and Riley bumps onto me
"Ohh. Are we stopping?" No, I can't let everyone notice my obvious thing for him
"I'm not stopping. I'm resting" I start walking again to prove her wrog
"What's in this envelope tells me where I'm gonna be for the next four years" I stop again. Please stay here with me so we can know each other better, start a relationship and get married!
"Ohh. Are we stopping?" This time Elliot is the one teasing me. I hate being teased
"I'm not as young as I used to be."
"Good luck, Josh"
"Yeah, hi. I don't care" we walk out and I sigh in relief
"Congrats Maya. You managed to keep your hormones under control, well kinda. Just don't rub them over me" Elliot smirks and I can't help but rolling my eyes while smiling but I still think about that envelope, it could change everything for everyone in here.
"Maya? Aren't you coming with us?" I look back at the door, wondering if I should just screw everything up
"She has that look, Riley, we better stop her!" they start running towards me but it's too late because I'm already inside the apartment, on Josh's back.
"Where will you be?!"
"Hold on to your dignity, woman!"
"Too late for that" he tries to get me off of him
"Get off me, you little ferret!" Ohh, a nickname! I like it!
"Give it!"
"It's my life!"
"It affects me, too!" I take the envelope from him and open it
"Dear Applicant Boing"
"It doesn't say that!"
"This year we are only accepting married applicants"
"It doesn't say that!" This is hilario- oh my gosh... he got in!
"So... we regret to inform you that..." yeah, just a little prank
"Regret to inform me?"
"We regret to inform you that you will be spending the next four years in New York with Maya!"
"I got in? I got in!" I get off his back and open my arms to hug him
"We got in. Congratulations"
"Yay!" everyone screams before pushing me away to hug him, especially Elliot, who did it definitely on purpose.
"That's so great"
"Congratulations, Buddy. I'm so proud of you"
"It means a lot, Cory" So this is why he came here. He wanted to make him proud!
Okay, time to play cas' again.
"All very exciting, I'm sure. But Riley and I have our own educations to which to attend... to which" I take Riley by her hand and start draggin her to her bedroom but stop shortly after
"This is so great. And my buddy who goes there invited me to his dorm Tonight to meet some college friends if I got in"
"Ohh. Are we stopping?"
"Nope. We're doing something else now" I smirk
"When is this little party? Yeah, whatever, hi, I don't care"
"Uh, 10:00 tonight?"
"Where's this little party? Yeah, whatever, hi, I don't care"
"Greenwich Hall" How stupid of him. I grin
"Are we smiling? I'll smile. I'll smile anytime. What are we smiling about?"
"Bay window. Bay window right now" I've got a plan now.
"Can I sleep over at your house Tonight?" I ask the two siblings when we're sitting at the bay window
"Of course you can"
"But not really?" Riley pouts
"I'm going to that party"
"Ooh, you're going to sneak out? But he said it could go till 10:00"
"No Riles, it starts at 10:00"
"It starts at 10:00? Who even heard of such a thing?" her brother chuckles
"There are going to be college girls there. And they're pretty, and they're smart, and they're witches"
"I don't like witches"
"We can't let Josh fall under their spell, guys. I'm sneaking out"
"You will be grounded forever, don't do this"
"No Elliot. I'm not gonna look back and regret the things I didn't do. I want to look back and regret the things I did do" I can tell they're both confused
"You can't do this. Your conscience will always bother you"
"I don't have a conscience"
"Everybody does. And until yours shows up, we're going with you"
"Oh, really? You're ready to sneak out this window and crash a 10:00 college party with me?"
"I am so ready...It starts at 10:00?" okay, she's not ready at all.
"Well, we better go to school, see you"
"See you later girls. I'm gonna come back at 5"
"5? Why this late?"
"Football tryouts, maybe I'll get on the team" I frown
"You're a sophomore, don't you think it's a little to early for you?"
"Then when should I try? Senior year? No way. If they're not gonna let me in then I'll just try next year" Honestly, I'm worried about him, I know that he's been working out a lot, it even shows. But there's always gonna be someone stronger than him and I don't want him to get hurt
"Okay, just be careful"
"I will" Riley climbs out of the window
"I'm serious" he chuckles but then stops when he notices that I'm being dead serious
"Damn, you're serious. Don't worry Maya, I'll be fine, okay?"
"Maya! We're gonna be late"
"You better not get hurt or I'll punch whoever hits you" I say warningly before following Riley
"Okay, how are we pulling this caper off?" she asks me when we're in class
"Riley, if we snuck out for an adventure, I know you'd tell your parents"
"I promise I won't"
"Who's talking?" her dad asks
"We are. It's us" I face palm
"You ain't going"
"What is a lie? What are the effects of a lie on the human soul?"
"Why are you looking at me?" I roll my eyes
"The man who summed up the price of a lie was Edgar Allan Poe in 'The Tell-Tale Heart' Farkle"
"So... this guy chops somebody up, hides him in the floor. He's cool for awhile, but all of a sudden, Boom, boom. Boom, boom. Boom, boom! His guilty conscience made him hear the heartbeat under the floorboards. So, he gave himself up. Some people just ain't cut out for this stuff" that Zay kid is like my male version, just lazier, but actually smarter.
"He called on me, you know" Farkle says with a hiss
"I know stuff. I know a lot of stuff. I know stuff about you"
"You don't know anything about me"
"Boom, boom.
"Why would you do that?"
"Boom, boom"
"I don't understand. Why would you do that?" Woah, he does know stuff
"Boom, boom!"
"All through kindergarten, I never fell asleep once. I was faking all my naps. Faking them. I can't do it. I don't know how Maya can just fall asleep anywhere" true! Wait, tht just reminds me that I'm very sleepy right now. My eyelids are heavy that I could just...fall...asleep...
"I never wake you up!" I shout when Mr. Matthews slams his hands on my desk
"For those of us who have one. Now, just as the truth comes out, so too will a lie. How will you live your lives? How strong is your conscience?" I notice that Riley looks nervous, she's not ready, not yet, I can't force her
"We haven't done anything yet"
"Oh, yeah..." After school we go home, waiting for Elliot to come back from his tryouts, I really hope he's gonna be okay
"We're back!" I hear Mr. Matthews say
"We?"
"Yeah, Elliot just couldn't walk home by himself"
"Really? Was it really that bad?!" I'm shocked.
"Yeah"
"Girls, help me get him to his his bed while I get some bandages"
"Of course" we stand up and walk to the living area where we find him laying on the couch and I can't help but gasp, he's covered in bruises everywhere
"Are you okay?" he sits up
"Yeah, I'm fine"
"Dad said we should help you get to your room"
"I'm fine Riley" he stands up but quickly loses his balance. Luckily Riley and I catch him on time
"Yeah, sure, fine" I reply sarcastically as we walk in his room and lay him down
"Riley! Where's the emergency kit?" she rolls her eyes and sighs
"Seems like he can't find anything on his own" she stands up and walks out of the room
"Look at you. There's blood everywhere. You're covered in bruises and blood in every inch of your body" How could I let it happen? I shouldn't have let him try. He sits up
"Hey, at least I got in" he replies in an attempt to make me feel better
"Come on Maya, I'm fine"
"Who hurt you like this?"
"The whole team. But it's fine. It's part of football" I cup his face
"Well, then it's part of Maya to tear all of their faces off for hurting you like this" he lays his forehead against mine
"Don't exaggerate. I'm fine. I'm here. You're here. We're here. I'm not dead and I got in as a quarterback. This is honestly one of the best days in my life"
"Please be more careful"
"I promise"
"You better" I can feel his breath on my lips and there's something hypnotizing in his eyes. Wait, no, Maya stop. We clarified everything last week, I can't mess this up- well, now he's the one who messed it up since he's kissing me but, I kiss back. The past, the future, they're gone, we're living in the present right now. Our kiss lasts for an eternity until we pull away, gasping for air
"I-I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that" I look down. I don't wanna see his look when he notices that I'm blushing
"It's fine. We clarified everything, we're friends" he nods
"Yup, friends" I look back at him. He can't go out in this state
"And as a friend, I think you shouldn't go out with Riley and me"
"What? Are you kidding? I'm coming with you"
"We can go alone"
"Be careful?"
"We will"
"Thanks...just so you know I'm worried as friend" I nod
"Of course" we look into each other's eyes and smile until Riley and her dad come back and clean all of his wounds.
Seems like he had a lot of them since it's now dinner time, you should've seen Ms. Matthews' reaction when she saw him, I think hers was even worse than mine. Thankfully he's fine and we're all having dinner now
"Before you give up on me completely, you've gotta give me a trial run at least. You gotta, Maya. You've just gotta" I groan
"Yay. If I succeed..."
"I take you. And if you fail..."
"I'm out, and out like a light" good girl
"Okay" I look over Mr. Matthews
"What's he doing?"
"He loves his tots"
"Eight. Nine. 10? 10 tots" he frowns
"Auggie. How many you got?"
"12"
"Gimme"
"Do I have to?" he gives his tater tot to him
"He counts the tots on everybody's plate to make sure nobody gets more than him"
"That's not what I do. I know one thing for sure about life. 10 tots is one tot too little, and 12 tots is one tot too much"
"Watch this, Riley. Mr. Matthews, you're looking good. You wearing your hair different?"
"How would that even be possible?"
"Thank you, Maya. A lot of work" I take advantage of the situation and take one of his tater tots and put it on her plate while he isn't looking. Weird, she's nervous, very nervous
"What's the matter with Riley?" Auggie asks her
"I don't know, Auggie. Riley, is there something wrong?"
"Yeah-huh"
"You know what? I'm not really hungry. Does anybody else want this?"
"Riley, are you going to eat this? Or are you not going?"
"I'm going" she eats it. Perfect. She's ready. After dinner we head to NYU. Okay, now, let's find Joshua
"I can't believe we snuck out the window. I've never been to a college before. They're going to know I don't belong here"
"Don't talk. Just act like you fit in"
"I want to talk so bad"
"You don't know what to say. You've never been to a college before"
"Beat Notre Dame!"why did she yell that?! she gets picked up by some football jocks
"Maya!" I sigh
"Give her back" she's returned by them
"See you at the game, boys"
"Riley-"
"If you talk here, they pick you up and they carry you"
"That's ridiculous"
"Oh, yeah? Gamma Gamma Nu!" Incredible! She gets picked up by sorority girls now and I sigh again
"Give her back" they return her
"I just pledged. I don't want to wait for college to be real. I'm staying" I notice Josh but- never mind. It's too late. I wanna go home
"We're leaving"
"Why?"
"We got here too late. How did I think I could ever compete with them?"
"Maya... A Gamma Gamma girl does not let her sister give up at the first sign of trouble"
"You're not a Gamma Gamma girl"
"Ry-Ry! You totally ditched us" Right then a girl walks by us
"I'm dealing with some stuff, Harriet"
"I shouldn't tell you this, but you were already voted best friend to have"
"I thought Gretchen had that"
"Nope. You! Gamma song?"
"Of course, Gamma song"
"We are the sisters of Gamma Gamma Nu. We are humble, but we're better than you. We help people everywhere, but we still love our hair. 'Cause we're Gamma Gamma Nu. Whoo! Stop it"
"That's ours!" I say, offended
"Grow up little girl"
"Don't call me a little girl, I'm leaving"
"You're not"
"Riley, how do I even begin to compete with those girls in there? Please take me home"
"Bold women make bold choices"
"What does that even mean?"
"It's a Gamma thing. It's what we say right before we shove a sister into a bold choice" she shoves me into the dorm where Josh is. Holy-
"Maya, Riley?" A guy looks at us with a smirk
"You know these girls, Josh? How you doing?"
"We're in middle school" I say, warning him
"Oh! They can't be here, Josh"
"No kidding. Riley, what are you thinking? You have to go" he looks very upset, I better listen to him
"You're right, Josh. We're sorry. This was a bad idea"
"Wait. Intrigued. Maya? What was your bad idea?" a girl asks me. I guess I have to tell her everything
"He's her Uncle Josh. I call him Uncle Boing, because look at him"
"She made me sneak out a window to come here. That's how much she likes him. Because she was afraid that you guys were witches, and that you would steal him from her" her uncle looks down in embarrassment
"They're not witches, Riley. They're girls who don't live at home anymore and know a lot more than we do"
"Sorry we interrupted your evening"
"Oh, I think our evening has just begun"
"Initiation!" great, my best friend is taken away again
"All right. Bring her back" Josh follows her
"Hey"
"Hey"
"So, Maya, what do you see in this guy?"
"How long have you had a crush on him?" this is very frustrating
"It's not a crush. It isn't. Maybe I'm not as old as you guys, but I know what I feel"
"Hey, I've never done anything like what you're doing"
"Yeah, it makes you pretty grown-up to me"
"I just thought if I did something like this, then he might take me seriously and then maybe we could come to some kind of understanding" Josh returns
"We have an understanding" We do?
"I stay here, you go home"
"Sit down" the girls tell him
"Okay" he sits on the bed, next to Andrew. I look at the floor
"I'm just stupid, right?"
"Hey. I would love if somebody did something stupid for me"
"Yeah, it's not the big gestures that we do for other people that help us grow up"
"But the small choices you make for yourself" Riley finally comes back
"Ohh. Maya told you guys about her crush" How many times do I have to tell them?!
"It's not a crush" I clarify as I stand up
