Prologue

Phase One:
Preoccupation, difficulty focusing; dry mouth; perspiration, sweaty palms; fits of dizziness and disorientation; reduced mental awareness, racing thoughts; impaired reasoning skills.

Phase Two:
Periods of euphoria; hysterical laughter and heightened energy; periods of despair; lethargy changes in appetite; rapid weight loss or gain fixation; loss of other interests; comprised reasoning skills; disorientation of reality; disruption of sleep patterns; obsessive thoughts or actions; paranoia; insecurity.

Phase Three:
(Critical)
Difficulty breathing; chest, throat, or stomach pain; difficulty swallowing; refusal to eat; complete breakdown of rational faculties; erratic behavior; violent thoughts; hallucinations and delusions

Phase Four:
(Fatal)
Emotional or physical paralysis (partial or total); death

I close the book shuddering as the last word—death echoes in my mind. I silently thank God for keeping me safe, away from this deadly disease—Deliria Amor Nervosa, Love disease.

For so long, seventeen years of my life, I've been able to be safe from Deliria by being off the radar of boys, keeping to myself and never being anywhere near the infected, the Invalids. Soon I'm going to choose and then on my eighteenth birthday I'll be immune to Deliria, free from it. My choice is crystal clear—to be a cured. I've it all planned. I can only hope that things will go as planned.
