"I had nice parents, but everyone else pretty much hated me," you said, fiddling with your sweatshirt. "So when my parents died--"

"How did they die?" Rogers interrupted.

"Some sort of fire... I'm not very sure. Why?" you asked.

"No reason," he said, but by the slight quiver in his voice, you knew that was not entirely true.

"Anyway," you continued, "my grandparents pretty much ditched me at the funeral. So I walked home--"

"How old were you when this happened?" Natasha asked.

"It was 5 years ago, so I was only (Y/A 5 years ago)," you replied. "Now do you want to hear the story or not, because I will gladly  stop."

"Continue," they said at the same time.

"So I walked home and started washing people's cars for cash. But ever since, I stopped going to school. Instead, I walked 3 miles to get to a library to study from their nonfiction section for my education. And I've been eating peanut butter sandwiches and wearing hand-me-downs every single day. That's basically it."

"Interesting," Natasha said, "We should tell the rest of the gang about this. Maybe we can have Stark have you help in the lab and see how much you --"

"NO no no no no," you quickly protested. "I need you guys to keep this a secret. I don't want anyone doubting me because of my past, thinking I need sympathy. Because if I wanted to, I could go home right now and be mostly fine the rest of my life."

Natasha and Steve gave you a strange look.

"Look, I know I met you guys yesterday, but I need this to be kept quiet. If you want me here, I'll help you. But if I'm only gonna be something that you guys need to comfort or keep safe, I'm out."

"Well, Nick Fury has already deemed you safe and checked your record, so your good to stay here," Rogers said. "We might as well find something for you to do."

Though you didn't want to seem overjoyed about a chance to start over, you couldn't help but crack a grin.

"Hawkeye is good with new recruits," Steve said, and Natasha agreed. "Maybe he can train you in combat?" Steve asked, looking at you.

"Combat?" you replied, stunned. "I've never done anything like that before and--"

"If you want us to be able to trust that you can take care of yourself," Natasha interrupted, "You should do it. Besides, Clint is good with recruits. He helped me out."

"And I will also have you work with Tony and Bruce in the lab," Steve finished. "Deal?"

You shrugged, knowing that there was no way out of this one. Besides, you finally  had the opportunity you'd always wanted.

"Deal," you agreed.

Natasha nodded, too. "You can start tomorrow morning, but tonight, you can meet the rest of the Avengers at dinner. Or, at least, officially."

"Should I change?" you asked, glancing down at your informal clothing.

"Your fine," Natasha assured. "Besides, you'll see people in much more interesting clothing."

You scrunched your eyebrows in confusion, but Steve just shrugs, not denying it.

~~~~~~~~~~
Natasha was right. Though Tony and Bruce arrived wearing a sports jacket, though somewhat charred from an earlier experiment, the others wore a variety of different outfits. Wanda wore an extremely short black dress with a red leather jacket, and was talking to her brother at the end of the table, who was wearing casual running clothes. Clint sported the black leather jacket with black pants, and took his arrows to the table. Rhodey seemed to be wearing his normal attire, besides the fact that he was wearing his war machine hand. Falcon went full out with his outfit, as he swooped in with his metal wings and red goggles. Natasha and Steve wore what you saw them wear earlier today, which must had been their daily attire.
Wanda began to bring out the food, using her powers to set it on the table.
"Show off," Tony muttered under his breath.
"You'll shut your mouth when you taste what I made for you," she shot back. You had to agree with her when the smell of (Your/Favorite/Food) danced through the air.
The rest of the Avengers sat at the table at the smell of the food, and Tony did in fact shut up. You quickly grabbed your fork and began to dig in, and couldn't help but moan at the taste. After all the years of peanut butter sandwiches, this tasted like delicacy.
You shoved your mouth and didn't stop until your plate was empty. You looked up and saw that all the Avengers were staring at you, Steve and Natasha included, all with their plates only half gone.
"Sorry," you muttered.
"She's still here?!" Falcon exclaimed.
Natasha glared at him as Tony answered, "I got her a room... JARVIS, uh, told me to."
You were about to speak up but Steve started before you. "Clint will be training (Y/N) and Bruce and Tony will be working with her in the lab," he announced.
Clint just gave you a grin and whispered to you, "I go easy on newbies, don't worry."
You almost retorted with a "don't stress about it," but you kept your mouth shut. You had no training and you knew it. Tony just gave you an eyebrow raise and Bruce looked at you nervously, and you knew why: he was afraid to unleash the Hulk.
A awkward silence fills the room, but you got out of your seat to help clear the plates from the table and took them over to the kitchen with Wanda.
"Be careful," she stated.
"What?" you responded. She stopped cleaning the dishes. "Our group, including me, we're dangerous. We do our best to do things for the better good, but it doesn't mean we're innocent people. You need to watch your back. We don't open up to new people well. We have trust issues. Just be careful and don't mess up to badly."
She dried the plate with a towel and left the room. You sighed, cleaning the last plate. Today wore you out, and tomorrow wouldn't be too different.
"JARVIS," you said, "show me to my room."
Sorry for the slightly slow chapter... the next one will be better. Should I do an explanation of your room in the STARK tower? I would love some feedback and thank you so much for reading ! Greatly appreciated ;)
On to the next chapter!
