The rest of the train ride was mostly quiet, allowing them both to rest a bit until the outlines of Hogwarts came into view. When the train reached its destination, they gathered their belongings and hurriedly made their way out of the train, eager to return to the castle they had called home for the past seven years.
Sophie couldn't help but feel a sense of solitude as she walked through the grand and empty hallways of Hogwarts. The echoes of her footsteps seemed to magnify the emptiness around her. Her heart ached at the thought of having to hang out with seventh years who were once her age. This meant that the peers she spent time with now would soon be graduating, leaving her to start anew with each passing year.
As she entered the Great Hall, a wave of nostalgia washed over her. She remembered the countless meals she had shared with her friends here, the laughter and camaraderie that had filled the air. But now, it felt different. The once lively hall seemed to echo with silence, and even the professors were only partially filling their seats, preparing for the new term.
At the far end of the Slytherin table, Sophie sat down, crossing her arms, and anxiously awaited the arrival of her fellow students. She felt a tinge of melancholy, knowing that this year would bring farewells to new friends and the need to forge new connections once again. The thought of saying goodbye to entire classes of people weighed heavily on her heart, and the prospect of repeating this cycle in the years to come seemed almost unbearable.
In the midst of her thoughts, Sophie noticed Professor Slughorn seated in his usual spot, sipping a drink from a hidden flask. She almost giggled at the sight, finding some comfort in the familiar routine of the Hogwarts staff.
As the students filed into the Great Hall, they were sorted by year, with the first years saved for last. McGonagall led the procession with a stern expression, her hat bouncing on her head. When she reached the podium, Dumbledore rose from his chair to greet them before settling back down.
The Sorting Hat, worn and wise, began its time-honored song, and the sorting ceremony commenced as each first-year student was called to be sorted into their respective houses. Sophie observed with a mix of nostalgia and anticipation, knowing that these newcomers would soon become the younger students she'd encounter in her remaining years at Hogwarts.
As the Sorting Hat's song ended and the last first-year was sorted, the Great Hall erupted with applause, welcoming the new members of each house. But for Sophie, there was an underlying sense of bittersweetness, knowing that in just a few short years, they too would be saying farewell to the friends they'd make along the way.
As the new students were being sorted, Sophie's attention was drawn to a very sophisticated-looking boy seated at the Ravenclaw table. His posture and demeanor suggested that he might be a fourth or fifth-year student. Intrigued, she couldn't help but wonder who he was, especially since he had a vaguely familiar smile and hair color that caught her eye.
