"THAT CRASH CAME FROM STARK'S ROOM! FOLLOW ME," Steve ordered before sprinting up the stairs with Natasha on his heels. Clark and I tried our best to keep up but ultimately our adrenaline carried us, not our athletic ability.
Captain America crouched down by the door and held up his shield. "Stay behind me-you too, Romanoff."
"Do you remember anything like this happening?" Clark whispered, his facial expression growing mildly concerned.
"No! I shouldn't have said anything about HYDRA! Telling them about their enemies-"
I stopped when I heard a scream. "Oh no, it's Pepper! Cap, I need you to move aside."
"I can't let you do that, I have to go in."
"I know what's happening, Cap, move aside!" It was a risky move, ordering a man that was a foot taller than me around. "Please," I added as an afterthought.
Against his better judgement, he moved out of my way. "JARVIS, open the door, please."
"Sorry, Miss, you don't have the authorization to-"
"Now, JARVIS, we need to get to Mr. Stark!"
Artificial intelligence can't roll their eyes, so I pictured James D'Arcy doing so instead as the door to Tony's room slid open and I rushed in. "Mr. Stark!"
Just like in Iron Man 3, Tony had summoned the suit in his sleep and Pepper was being dragged away from him.
"Mr. Stark, wake up!" I grabbed his arm and Pepper clawed at the gauntlet around her wrist. "Tony! Tony! Tony!"
The genius sat up, shaking, and his eyes widened at the nightmare before him. "Power down!" He outstretched his palm and the suit released Pepper. For extra measure, he hit it with the lamp on his bedside table and it fell apart.
Pepper dropped to the ground, breathing raggedly.
"I must have called it in my sleep. That's not supposed to happen. I'll recalibrate the sensors. Can we just...just let me...just let me catch my breath, okay?"
There was a jab in my chest. It's just like the movie.
Pepper stood up and started to walk toward the door, past Steve, Clark, and Nat. No, don't leave, he needs you!
"Don't go, alright? Pepper?" Tony's voice broke when he said her name.
"A teenager just saved me from one of your stupid suits." She turned to face him. "I'm going to sleep downstairs. Tinker with that."
