"AGENT COULSON! IT'S NICE TO MEET YOU," I greeted the older S.H.I.E.L.D. agent warmly.
I had requested that Nick Fury allow me to be present the day Grant Ward was analyzed for Phil Coulson's team. I also had yet to meet Agent Melinda May, but I would climb that mountain when I got there. I could probably convince Nat to help me find her, but Ward was my main concern.
Coulson accepted my handshake enthusiastically."You must be Madeline Howard!"
"Please, call me Madi. I heard you just came back from TAHITI," I commented.
"Yes, it's a magical place." Ooh boy, here we go.
"I'm sure it's lovely."
Coulson looked at me curiously. "Sorry to change the subject, but Director Fury has only told me a little about you."
"Fury loves his secrets. But I've heard about you as well." Fury also told me very specifically that I should stay out of your life.
"Is it true that you work with the Avengers?"
I stifled a laugh. "Yes, sir. I have a paid internship with Tony Stark, and I'm also being trained for work in the field. They also keep me at Avengers Tower as a team consultant."
"Consultant? No offense, but you seem young. What exactly do you-"
"Sorry, but we don't exactly have time for backstories right now." A voice interrupted.
She did that on purpose! "Agent Hill, it's good to see you again!" I greeted her with a smile. I see that Fury sent you here to keep my tongue in check.
She gave me a nod and an amused smile. "You too, Madi. Coulson, we're going to be debriefing Agent Grant Ward in my office."
"I wish Fury gave me an office. You said Agent Ward? I'll come with you."
That traitorous HYDRA scum! I fought back any exclamations of disgust before I told Hill, "Fury said I could join you. I know about your team- I have level clearance."
Coulson was surprised. "You do?"
"Level 9." I showed him my card.
"Ah, so that's how you knew I was alive. But I didn't think you were an agent."
"Oh, I'm not. It's a long story."
As we walked to the briefing room, I couldn't help but remember the day I had convinced Fury to give me clearance. I remembered it like it was yesterday, but it wasn't. It was more like a years worth of yesterday's.
