Mari and Toby McDonough

            They had nothing to say to each other. He had gone and done the unspeakable and kissed her best friend. Why? Who knows… she only knows that it was done and she was pissed. (Flashback) “What the hell, Toby?!” Mari cried, choking back tears. “Mari! It’s not what it looks like, I swear!” Toby cried. “Seriously?” Mari asked. “You’re going to use that?” “I swear!” Toby cried. “It wasn’t even me, it was all her!” Mari shifted her gaze to her best friend. “He’s lying” Her friend said. “She came on to me!” Toby cried. Mari’s friend shook her head. “No, he came on to me” she said. “Would I lie to you?” Mari looked at Toby. His eyes were shining as if he was holding back tears as well. She looked back to her best friend who had the most serious look on her face. “I believe her” Mari said. “What?! Why?!” Toby cried. “She’s my best friend” Mari said.

            Her friend shot Toby a look and then the two of them walked off leaving Toby behind and almost ready to cry. “Leave him me, he’s not worth it” Her best friend said. “Wait, one second” Mari said. She turned around and ran back to Toby. “Toby” Mari said. Toby looked at her with tears in his eyes. “We’re over” Mari said tearing up. Toby began to protest but before he could say anything Mari turned around and left to go back to her friend. “He’s not worth it” Mari’s friend said again. And with that they walked off leaving Toby in the dust. (End Flashback) Mari sat on her bed and sighed. “I miss him…” She said quietly. “I shouldn’t have broken up with him… Mari had found out the truth just one week ago. Toby had been right; Mari’s friend had come on to him. Mari had been told by someone who had happened to walk by and see the whole thing.

Now Mari and her friend were no longer talking and Mari had tried to talk to Toby and for one thing, apologize, but Toby wouldn’t talk to her. He didn’t even want to look at her. Nothing she could do was good enough anymore. Mari plugged her iPod into her docking station and put on her favorite band; Hot Chelle Rae, Why Don’t You Love Me? Mari sighed and leaned back on her bed. She closed her eyes and just listened to the music and let it carry her away. See I can't wake up; I'm living a nightmare, that keeps playing over again.  Locked in a room so hung up on you, and you're cool with just being friends. Left on the sidelines, stuck at a red light, waiting for my time, and I can't see, why don't you love me? Touch me; tell me I'm your everything, the air you breathe.  And why don't you love me baby? Mari tried to shove the thought of Toby out of her head but it just didn’t work. Nothing she did could get him to leave her thoughts and well; the song didn’t help too much either. See I'm just too scared to tell you the truth, cause my heart ache can't take anymore.  Broken and bruised longing for you, and I don't know what I'm waiting for. The music faded out and outside the window Mari heard more music. She walked over to the window and opened it and found Toby standing in the backyard holding a stereo over his head. She wore that black dress, Ray-Ban specks, looking like MTV. And I promise, when she moves like this, she’s the only thing that I see. She caught my eye, I lost my breath and I thought I should say hi but in my head I’m like oh my God, look at the way that she dances and oh my God, hope I don’t mess up my chances and oh my God, I swear, that it’s true, if there’s anyone meant for me, I swear it would be you, I swear it would be you. I Swear by Anson Li, one of Mari’s favorite songs and Toby knew it. Mari leaned over on the window sill and listened to the song play. Kiss me like it’s new year’s eve and the balls dropping at Time Square! Believe me when I’m with you if the world ends I don’t care. Toby set down the boom box and opened his arms and Mari ran into them for a hug. “There’s somebody meant for me, and I swear that it’s you” Toby said. Mari smiled and kissed him softly. “I love you Toby” She said. Toby grinned. “I love you too, Mar” Toby whispered.
