"There's a test on Friday," Mike said, "and I still don't understand any of this."

"You know how to do it, you're not trying."

"Because I hate Algebra. That's why I failed the first time."

"You have to want to understand or you'll never get it. Does that make sense?"

"A little."

"Besides, it should come naturally to you anyway."

"What do you mean?"

"The quadrants are like the football field."

"They are?"

"Yes," I smiled at how adorable he was when he was confused.

"How?"

"Close your eyes,"

"What?"

"Just trust me. Close your eyes."

"Okay," He sighed, closing his eyes.

"The field is one big square, right?"

"Right."

"So if your drew a horizontal line and a vertical line across it, there would be four quadrants."

"Okay, with you so far."

"Where's the first quadrant?"

"The top left?"

"No, try again."

"Top right?"

"Yes. The top left is the second. What's the bottom left?"

"The third?"

"And bottom right?"

"Fourth."

"What's in the fourth quadrant?"

"Are you talking about numbers?"

"No, I meant the....what's the end of field called?"

"The endzone?" He laughed as he opened his eyes.

"What numbers are in the endzone?" I rolled my eyes, smiling.

"The negative ones?"

"Yes."

"So I know where the quadrants are....but everything else...."

"Didn't you write it all down?"

"I lost the paper."

"How?"

"Stuff gets mixed up. I'm messy."

"Do you know where it could be?"

"Probably....somewhere in the hamper...I don't know."

"Wow...okay...moving on."

"Can I ask you a question first?"

"Sure,"

"Will you go out with me?"

"No," I looked down at my paper, avoiding his gaze.

"Why?" He asked calmly.

"You know why."

"Give me a real reason. Is it because I'm older than you?"

"No. It doesn't matter how old you are. I told you why I can't go out with you."

"You realize the more you say no, the more I'll ask you?"
