CHAPTER THIRTY TWO " WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOU BECOMING A GATOR! "
MARSHA HOLLAND CALLED TO HER DAUGHTER. Dylan ran down the stairs, "Yeah, mom?"
Her mother stood at the bottom of the stairs, holding a pile of mail in her hand. She held up a thick, brown envelope, with a familiar college stamp. San Francisco State University—Dylan wasn't disillusioned, she knew not to waste her money on on an Ivy and she wanted to go somewhere hot. Dylan paused, fear paralyzing her for a moment. Midterms had passed and other classmates had gotten their responses from their colleges and Dylan was waiting, letter-less and worried. She didn't know if her long wait was a bad sign or not but it felt like it.
Her dad walked out of the kitchen and smiled once he noticed what his wife was holding. He stopped behind her mom and put his arm around her shoulders. "Well, are you going to open it?"
Dylan slowly made her way down the stairs and her mom handed her the envelope. She had a heavy feeling in her gut as she used her nail to slice through the seal and sucked in a breath. She had researched west coast universities that accepted a lot of B students so if she were rejected, it would probably be community college for her.
MISS DYLILAH HOLLAND,
SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY is pleased to offer you conditional acceptance for the program Film and Media Studies, Fall 1985 semester. Your acceptance will be affirmed once we receive your final grades at the end of this school year. Your transcript must be sent directly by your school board and it must be received before the commencement of the Fall 1985 semester. We look forward to you becoming a Gator!
She read it, then reread it, and read it again almost in disbelief. She'd gotten in.
"Mom, dad, I'm in!" She announced excitedly. She pulled them into a hug. "I'm in!"
Her mother kissed her forehead. Her dad squeezed her tight. "We're so proud of you, baby," her mother said softly, not doubt ready to begin weeping.
Her father pulled away and patted her on the back. "Great work, sweetheart."
She thanked them excitedly. "I've got to call Steve!"
"Would you like use to get take-out for dinner? To celebrate?" Her mom called as she ran to the kitchen telephone. Dylan gave a quick nod in response.
The warm voice of Mrs. Harrington greeted her before passing the phone to Steve. "Hey, Dyl."
He sounded out of breath, she guessed he had probably just raced down the stairs at his mom's call. "Steve! Guess what?"
"A new Patrick Swayze movie was announced?"
"No," she laughed. "That would be amazing—but it's something else!"
