CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN
" THINKING. RELAXING. "

UNDER THE BLEACHERS WAS A SEA OF GREEN, not from the fresh grass but the array of graduation caps that had just been thrown in the air. Dylan glanced over at Steve, who winked her way. Her classmates scrambled to recover their cap's. Dylan stood in place for a moment, taking it all in. She wouldn't stand here again, not even for a stupid football game.

She stepped down when the crowd dispersed a little, grabbing the cap she thought was her's. The field was buzzing with excitement and chatter. People snapped photos relentlessly and there were a few sobs, most people were talking about the after party. Which Steve so graciously offered to host. And despite the mixed feelings about Steve that arose throughout the last two years, everyone was on board. Most likely because they knew he had a pool and his parents would supply free booze.

Steve followed closely behind her, squeezing her shoulders when they were on flat ground. "We did it, hey?"

"Yeah," she smiled, a little sad. "We did it."

He kissed her, only for the moment to be interrupted by their parents with a flash camera. Dylan groaned, shooing away her mother's hand that was holding the camera. But this did little to stop her from snapping pictures.

"We better get home," Mrs. Harrington said to Steve. "We've still got some setting up for tonight. A couple errands to run."

Steve nodded, quickly giving Dylan another swift kiss before being dragged off by his parents. He did glance back as he was leaving, his usual sloppy grin on his face.

"Oh, I'm so proud of you!" Her mother cheered, grabbing Dylan into an overly tight embrace. Dylan held back her complaints, knowing her mom wouldn't have many other opportunities like this. Her dad smiled, giving her a hug as well, and a kiss on the top of her head.

"We should hurry home, too," Dylan told them, ending the moment. "I've got to get changed for the party."

Her parents agreed and the three of them weaves through the bubbling crowd of graduates to their car in the jam packed lot. Dylan scurried inside once they arrived home, eager to get ready. 'Congrats Grad!' decor was scattered haphazardly around the house, a surprise from her mother when she woke up this morning.

Her dad entered after them, a few letters in hand, obviously stopping to check to mail before coming inside. He waved a small brown envelope to get her attention. "Dyl, this one's for you."

Dylan frowned at the university label on the envelope and tore it open. Her stomach fell as she read what was typed inside.
