Would you hear me out

If I told you I was terrified for days?

Thought I was gonna break

"I really like you." Tom said softly, fumbling with his fingers while his gaze was on his lap as the two of you sat on his couch. You felt your body freeze up and your heart stop as all the sounds of the city faded away until all you could hear was your heart beating rapidly in your chest. You weren't expecting Tom to say that and it made you nervous.

"I-" You managed to get out. A sad smile graced Tom's face. You didn't need to say anything else for him to get the point.

"I get it, Y/N. You don't feel the same." He replied, his words soft.

"Tom I'm-I'm sorry." You spit out, tears filling your eyes as you tried to keep your breathing even.

"I think you should go." He told you, guiding you to the front door. You nodded, keeping yourself together and walking across the hall to your apartment.

You avoided Tom for days. Rather than waiting for him like you usually did, you waited until you knew he left to go to work to leave your apartment to avoid seeing him on the stairs or in the hallway. You ignored his texts and calls, always sending him to voicemail. It wasn't that you were mad at him. Rather, you were scared. You didn't ever want to lose him. He was the one constant thing in your life. Everyone else left after graduation but Tom didn't. The two of you worked different jobs but somehow always had time for each other. You had your annual camping trip coming up- that scared you too. Typically the two of you would drive out to the country, escape the city and spend a couple nights in a tent, swimming in the lake during the days.

You weren't sure if Tom would even want to go on the trip with you anymore. You were sure he hated you, but it was a conversation to have in person.

Knock knock.

The would felt rough against your knuckles and nerves filled your stomach. How would he react? You were supposed to leave the next night- you didn't blame him if he didn't want to go or if he didn't want to see you again but you needed to know.

Your eyes moved up from your feet to meet Tom's as he opened the door. One look at who was at his door and he nearly shut it, only keeping it open when he heard your voice call out "wait!"

"Will you hear me out?" You asked.

"Probably not." Tom muttered, shaking his head.

"What if I told you I was terrified?" You asked again, this time your voice dropping. Tom didn't reply, but held the door open as a silent invitation to let you in. You did so, stepping into his apartment and closing the door behind you.

"Why were you terrified?" Tom asked, taking a seat at his small table.

"Uh," you started, fiddling with your hands, suddenly feeling nervous. "I don't k-"

"You do fucking know, Y/N. If you're not going to explain why you knocked on my door after ignoring me for days after I told you how I felt, then please just get out."

Oh, I couldn't stop it

Tried to slow it all down

Crying in the bathroom

Had to figure it out

Right after you entered your apartment after leaving Tom's the night he told you how he felt, you made your way to your bathroom, slamming the door shut and sliding down against the door as tears poured from your eyes. You tried to slow down your breathing but they continued coming out rapidly. You tried to gather your thoughts enough to figure it all out- how you feel about Tom, why you were sobbing, but it was all too much to figure out at one time. When you finally left the bathroom, you opened your front door slightly, seeing Tom's light was completely out. There was no soft light peeking through under his door like usual. Tom had completely shut down for the night.

Can you feel me now

That I'm vulnerable in oh-so many ways?

Tom's voice pulled you back to reality, breaking up your thoughts.

"Y/N? You gonna go or what?" He snapped.

"N-No. I'm sorry, Tom. For everything." You spoke, your voice soft. "I did what I did because I was scared. Um, of losing you. I just- You mean so much to me and I don't want to lose you if we were to um, break up. But I, uh, I do feel the same way about you. If you still feel that way."

Tom's face softened, his brown eyes filled with sympathy.

"Hey, you couldn't ever lose me. 'M with you forever." He soothed, standing up and walking over to you, pulling you into a hug.

"Thought you hated me." You whimpered into his shoulder as he rubbed your back gently.

"I could never hate you." He responded. "And by the way, I do still feel the same way about you."

"Are we- do you still wanna go camping?" You asked, glancing at him.

"Hell yeah."

And do you believe me now

That I always had the best intentions, babe?

Always wanted to stay

Ed Sheeran played softly throughout the car as Tom drove out to your usual camping site. Your feet were on the dashboard and you hummed along quietly.

"I always wanted to stay, yanno." You mumbled as Tom pulled up to the site.

"So you ghosted me for days?" He teased, frowning when he saw you pouting. "Hey, it's okay. I just missed you, is all."

"You were mad at me." You pointed out.

"You can be mad at someone and still miss them."

You smiled, feeling your heart beat faster as Tom slowly inched his face closer to yours until you could feel his breath fanning over your face.

"Can I kiss you?" He whispered, making you nod as he closed the gap between the two of you, pressing his lips to yours softly as his hand moved to cup your cheek.

"So," you mumbled as you pulled away, your forehead still resting against his. "You missed me, huh?"

"Shut up."
