13 years later
"Come on Vinni, we're gonna be late." Angelo rushed as he re-tucked his light blue dress shirt into his slacks. Making sure his black dress shoes held their original shine, he slipped his coat over his shoulders- his hair combed back and his face cleanly shaven.
Thunderous footsteps came down the stairs and Vinni appeared. His outfit less formal with a simple black button up, jeans, and black timbs. Slipping his own coat over his shoulders, Vinni stopped to push his hair into its original flip before he hustled outside to catch Angelo.
Luciano would be performing lead at his last high school show choir national. He'd already been accepted into Juilliard but it was rumored that a Broadway agent would be coming to see him perform. Angelo had never missed a single show and he knew this one was the biggest of them all.
"Would you relax? Everything will be alright. Luciano's a natural." Vinni assured but Angelo wasn't so sure. While he had no doubt Luciano would blow away the agent, he knew this was a big moment for Luciano- a moment his mother wouldn't be here to see.
"I know. I know, I just want everything to go as smoothly as possible." Angelo took in a deep breath to calm himself- his nervously bouncing leg unstoppable.
The truck stopped outside of the venue and Angelo sprung from his seat, his legs carrying him towards the dressing rooms.
"Hello. Hi." He smiled at the familiar faces of the kids in show choir. Because of his home's size, it was often the go to for after practice chill sessions- sometimes even practices. It had gotten to the point where Angelo built Luciano his own music room for his 16th birthday.
"Luciano!" He called at the head of curly hair. Luciano smiled brightly at his father before throwing himself into his chest. "You got this kiddo. Go out there and show them what they're missing. Both your grandpas are looking down on you with smiles."
Angelo felt tears sting his eyes as he embraced his son tightly. He was watching his son fulfill his biggest dream and there was nothing that could match the pride that filled his chest.
"I love you, dad. Thank you for believing in me."
..."And the winner of this years Show choir Nationals is... Columbia Heights!" Angelo jumped from his seat- his voice cracking as he cheered out. A smile split his face as he watched them embrace and cheer before a large gold trophy was given to them.
He embraced Vinni, the men rocking back and forth as they cheered on his son. As other people left the venue, their heads low, Angelo and Vinni loudly cheered like rowdy teens as they exited the building. Waiting by the car they quieted down as the other kids began coming out- tears in some of their eyes.
Minutes later the door burst open and the Columbia Heights kids came rushing over. Angelo and Vinni embraced the kids, giving them words of encouragement, before they each scurried to find their respective parents.
"Seems like you're everybody's dad now." Luciano joked, a bright smile on his face.
"Come here, figlio." Angelo spoke animatedly as he pulled his son into a bear hug- school girl giggles of excitement falling from him. Luciano laughed as he embraced his father back.
"Excuse me." Came a soft voice from behind his son. Angelo released his son and eyed the woman suspiciously- the glock tucked in his waistband ready at a moments notice.
"I'm Cathy Bates from Bell Monte hospital. I tried to contact you multiple times today Mr. Costello." She smiled slightly and Angelo felt his heart drop. He had placed his phone on silent as he didn't want any distractions while his son was performing. "It's about your-"
