Assessment is the act of judging someone or something. Self assessment therefore means judging oneself. It means careful evaluating your actions and giving yourself a judgement. There's no 3rd party in self assessment because you do it all by yourself.

Some people do this when making their yearly goals like at the start or end of a year. Some others, especially students do this at the beginning of a term. Some people do it randomly while others do it everyday. However you do it, it's important to judge yourself. The great thing about is you can't  make yourself feel bad like others do when they judge you.

You basically have to be very honest to yourself and decide if your actions towards situations or people were wrong or right. You can also do this anywhere and anytime so no court room is needed.

Like the chapter title says, it gives improvement. Some professionals suggest we do this everyday so we can improve ourselves for the next day as well as helping us achieve your goals or resolutions faster.

So assess yourself to improve because really, no one knows you better than yourself.
