Chapter 3

~Dane~

Even though I really didn't want to go to Hummingbird's open mic night since Carrie was going to be performing, but I always felt obligated to go to her shows whenever they were in town.

I hated feeling obligated towards her. The only thing I get out of our partnership was money, which, yeah, was nice, but a little credit here and there would be nice.

But then again, I wasn't much of a performer. Maybe I didn't deserve any credit.

At least I wasn't going to feel completely bored at the open mic night. Zion kept asking me over and over again if I was going, even when I kept telling him that I was. Knowing he was going to be here made me less annoyed about going. It was always entertaining where Zion was.

I mean, he did flood the concession stand with popcorn after all. More than once.

I wasn't going to lie, I was extremely bored when I got to Hummingbird. I wanted to pay attention to the performers because a lot of them were so talented. In fact, there were multiple times when talent scouts from record labels would show up to try and find new talent to sign.

But no matter how everyone was, I just couldn't pay attention to the performances. Probably because I've been feeling extremely down lately. I didn't know if it had to do with Carrie throwing out my song or just the lack of credit overall. Whatever it was, I didn't think I would feel better anytime soon.

Halfway through open mic night, it was Carrie's turn to perform. I had no idea what song she was going to perform. She was supposed to perform the new song that I wrote for her, but she trashed it and never asked me to write a new one.

Maybe she would just sing one of the other songs I wrote for her upcoming album.

As it turned out, she did not.

Carrie sang a brand new song, one I didn't write. I definitely wouldn't write a song like this.

Basically, it was about her being better than everyone else because she was rich and famous.

I wanted to say I couldn't believe she would sing something like this, but after the way she had been acting the past couple months, I could believe it. One hundred percent. The fame had gone to her head.

It was why she was sucking out all the fun of songwriting for her. I didn't mind it at first. She genuinely loved my songs and would get excited every time I wrote a new one for her. Now? It was the opposite.

However, Carrie still got a lot of applause from the audience. How could she not? She was a very talented singer, and some people just didn't care about lyrics. They only liked if a song's tune and beat was catchy, which I did get. But I was a lyrical person. Heck, I wrote songs for a living. Of course I was going to focus on the lyrics more.

After Carrie got off the stage to let room for the other performer, Carrie walked over to the table I was sitting at. "See?" she said. "That's how you write a song."

I didn't even bother replying to her. I just looked back at the stage, so Carrie scoffed and walked off.

The MC walked onto the stage, smiling brightly. "Wasn't that an amazing performance by Carrie Brightfield? It's always a pleasure to have her song during open mic night."

Yeah, singing about how she was better than everyone else. Such a pleasure.

"Next on the list to perform is..." The MC looked at the list in her hand. "Zion Steele."
