Chapter 5

~Dane~

I was completely fed up with Carrie, and that's saying something because I was already fed up with the way she has been acting.

After I got home from work on Saturday, I was listening to the radio as I was doing my homework. Carrie ended up having a radio interview, and the host discussed her performance at Hummingbird.

Zion's name actually came up. The radio host brought up the fact that the song he sang at Hummingbird was similar in style to the Carrie's songs.

       I wonder why.

Carrie was asked what she thought about Zion, and she actually said that even though the song was great, he was probably a "one hit wonder".

Carrie thought Zion was a one hit wonder, even though he sang a song I originally wrote for her.

I didn't know if she was saying it to get back at me for quitting, or to get back at Zion for singing the song. Either way, as soon as my homework was done, I got started writing a new song for Zion in response. One that was going to show Carrie that Zion was not a one hit wonder.

He was way too talented for that.

I ended up spending the whole weekend, including most of the nights, writing the song. I didn't even finish it until four in the morning on Monday, so I was extremely tired by the time I got to school. I was able to make it through the first two periods, but I ended up crashing at lunch.

I was going to go to the cafeteria, but it was normally quite loud at lunch, so I just went to a place I knew I was going to be able to nap for a bit.

       The music room.

I was surprised not too many people took advantage of this space. Not only were there couches in here, but there were a few equipment that could be used to record audio and video. This might actually be the perfect place for Zion to record songs until we could get some better equipment at home...

I'd have to talk to him about it later. In the meantime, I really had to take a nap.

Since nobody was occupying the music room, I walked over to the couches and flopped down on it, dropping my bag on the ground beside it. I curled up on the couch, hoping I would actually be able to sleep for a bit. I didn't want to end up falling asleep during my last two classes of the day.

I must have been able to fall asleep because before I knew it, I was waking up to someone saying, "Psst. Dane. Wake up," while gently shaking me.

I opened my eyes, seeing Zion kneeling beside the couch. I sighed. "You couldn't let me sleep?"

"What do you mean?" Zion asked. "I've been in here for, like, five minutes before deciding to wake you up."

I sat up. "Oh, that's nice that you waited for a few minutes before waking me up."

Despite the clear sarcasm in my voice, Zion just sat down beside me on the couch and said, "I know, right?"

"That was sarcasm," I said. "Why exactly did you wake me up?"

"Oh, one of my friends was telling me about Carrie's radio interview," Zion said. "And apparently, how I'm just a one hit wonder."

"Yeah, I know," I said. "I listened to that interview. So I wrote a song."

       "What, really?"
