...their door carelessly hitting your car. What do you do?
By: Peter Cia
Well, I was the guy who opened the door. I was 17 and as I was getting out of my car I slipped, falling into my door with my full weight, ramming my door into the side of a brand-new Cadillac putting a dent and scratch into the door. I wiped down the car to no avail —scratch and dent were still there.
I waited sitting in my car trying to figure out what this owner was going to do. After an hour, I went into a store to grab a drink and came out to a guy and his wife looking at their car's damage.
I walked up to them apologizing that I just needed a drink that I was there 90 minutes and got thirsty. The woman said you've been waiting 90 minutes to tell us you damaged our car! I said yes and I was sorry and if it was possible to pay off damages because I was a student working only a few hours on weekends. After the first week, I was able to pay $10.00 towards the damage.
The second week, the owner's wife made me an offer: I could work for them (getting a good pay) but that 1/2 the money I earned had to go into the bank and I could keep the rest for myself. I only paid $10.00 towards the damage I caused; they didn't take any more for the damage because of me facing up to my obligations. But they also bought me lunch every Saturday I worked.
Being honest and stepping up taught me a valuable lesson.
