The U.S.S Crofters (Analogical)

This is analogical but there isn't much romance. Logan hints that there is something there but nothing properly happens, I guess it's technically fluff though.

If you want me to write a second part including more romance please let me know and I'll see what I can do.

The doors slid open as an engineer stepped onto the deck of the U.S.S Crofters. There was a large window looking out into space. The aforementioned engineer's eyes were blown wide as he looked out at the abyss in front to us. I hadn't seen him before but he wore protocol uniform so I didn't worry. Apparently my lieutenant did.

"And what are," Lieutenant Prince looked the engineer up and down disdainfully before stepping forward, fully blocking my view of him, " What are you, doing here. This is not a place for some ordinary engineer."
"Hey, there. I'm just here for a laugh. Thought It would be just swell to meet some of the gang."
"Leave! Now!"
"I was given a telecommunication to fix a control board." I could see his hands sticking up in defence. The lieutenant stood his ground.
"I sent for the head of engineering to fix it."

"First day replacing her. I definitely get why she would want to leave though, after interacting with you. Now, I am ever so sorry oh high and mighty one, but can I do my job now. Pretty please?" Roman turned to me, looking livid. I raised an eyebrow at him and he brought the man to his station. I went back to my files.

We are a ship of democratic union so we don't do a lot of flying. As Captain of this ship I represented earth, meaning I would help oversee decisions on all sorts of things from interstellar travel to generic trade. At present I was trying to do some research on the Wartari's financial needs and how much the other races would be willing to aid, how they would provide aid, and what the agreement would be to make it worth their while. Emphasis on trying, however the two crew men behind me were desperate to prevent me from coming to any form of conclusion.

"Are you really that foolish?"
"Says the one with piercings and dyed hair. You look like a stupid emo."
"Maybe I look stupid but it least I'm not actually stupid, unlike you."
"Crewman, Lieutenant." I thought that I should intervene here.
"How dare you!"
"I can't believe they trusted a dimwit like you with a console."
"Enough!" I bellowed.

"Are you going to let him speak to me like this!" Roman declared
"I said, enough." I looked the engineer up and down. He held my gaze. "Can you fix it?"
"Yes, just some circuit failures. Not hard to fix but dangerous if not repaired."
"Ok then get to work." Roman huffed and made offended noises as he gestured towards the engineer who was looking through his bag.
"Lieutenant Prince, please see if our international guests are settled." I could see the frustration painted all over his face as he left the deck.

The engineer worked diligently and quietly. I couldn't help myself from sparing glances at him. It was very strange as I had never been this distracted by someone before, let alone someone who wasn't even speaking to me. Eventually he looked up.
"Captain, I believe it's fixed." I had finally managed to focus enough on my work when I heard the voice. I looked around and saw the engineer wrapping a plaster on his finger.
"Crewman Hart, please check the panel." After the console was confirmed to work I looked back at the engineer.

"What's your name?"
"Virgil Samael, Sir."
"Well, Virgil Samael, welcome to the ship."

I had just finished speaking to Dr Picani when I walked into the hallway. This area of the station was for medical and research purposes only, so when I saw a familiar looking engineer pushed out of a doorway I was certainly puzzled.
"Don't ever mess with my stuff again!" Dr Mendacious leaned into the engineers face then turned and slammed the door. The Doctor did research on other species that we work with. There are still many things we do not know and are therefore, needing to update the safety of the ship frequently. The engineer shook his head and picked up his bag.
"Crewman Samael?"
"Yes," He turned around, with a nonchalant expression that was almost immediately replaced by an anxious one. "Oh! Captain do you acquire my assistance?"
"No, I wanted to query why Doctor Mendacious shouted at you." I started walking and he fell into step with me.

"Oh, well... I was fixing some of his monitors, he had burnt them out, but I had to move some of his work to get to the wiring, I'm sure you can see where it went from there."
"Ah. I would recommend you stay out of his way for a while, he never forgets."
"Oh I know," he laughed and I shot him a quizzical look, "Janus and I go way back. We were in The Academy together for a little while before separating to follow our different career paths."
"I see." We fell into a comfortable silence for a while before I remembered something that I had wondered for a while now. "Crewman-"
"Captain, call me Virgil, crewman sounds weird." I looked at Virgil but he nodded back.

"Well, Virgil, you seem to be getting yourself into a fair amount of trouble" A flicker of panic appeared in his eyes.
"I-I, I'm not sure what you mean?"
"The argument with Lieutenant Prince, the brief one now. You haven't been here long."
"Okay, so that's partially my fault but it's not like I'm the poster boy for Star-fleet, am I?"
"I'm sorry?"
"Well I have piercings and died hair. I don't look like someone who spent all their time studying, I'm stereotyped as a juvenile delinquent. People always doubt my abilities so I get anxious and defensive."
"So what do you think the Star-fleet image is?"

I had now massively detoured from my intended location but there was something about the person next to me that made me not mind.
"There are two types of Star-fleet members."
I looked at him with interest and an excited smile washed over his previously cold facade.

"You have the Lieutenant Prince's. They are the ones who are used to being in the limelight and take their duties with pride. They do what they do because they feel like a hero and look down upon those who are lesser. Really though, they are just scared of the thought of failure. But to the outside world they have to hide that."

"Very astute observations. What about the second type?"

"Well, the second type is more like you. They look like they know better than you, they think they know better than you. And the worst part is, they actually do know better than you. These people probably worked really hard in school, even though their intelligence is of such a high degree that they didn't even need to. Teachers either hated you, because you were better then them, or loved you because you were a teacher's pet."

"Oh. Well-well if you're so good at reading people then, what do you think teachers thought about me?" I didn't know what to think about the way Virgil summed me up. Some parts were true but others were large stereotypes.
"Usually know-it-all's aren't put on ships where they will have to do political interactions because their superiors know that if given an order they don't agree with, they will go against it."
"So I'm the other type?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Oh you were definitely the Golden Boy Grass." There was a smug grin on his face. Usually I wouldn't let anybody speak to me like this, like we were friends, but I was enjoying it so decided not to think about how Virgil acted towards superiors for now.
"I might have been a bit of a goody-two-shoes but-"
"A bit?" We laughed at this.
"So maybe more than a bit, however teachers despised me. Most hated me with all their hearts and it killed them that I was the only student good enough to be recommended for a job on this ship."
"Woah. Usually I'm really good at reading this stuff."
"How many ships have you been on?"
"Many. People, for some reason keep on moving me to different ships. It's great because it usually means a promotion, but I don't exactly think I deserve them."
"You seem to be doing very well at your job. I'm sure you deserve all your previous promotions."

There was a beep from a comms device on the back of Virgil's hand.
"Thank you Captain but speaking of my job, I have to go. There is some sort of pipe burst." Virgil started walking away.
"Virgil!" I called out to him.
"Yes Captain?"
"Call me Logan." Virgil smiled at me before disappearing into the crowd.

I shook my head of thoughts but I couldn't get rid of the strange feeling that was going on in my stomach. It wasn't unwelcome but it was unusual. I should reflect on this.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This has inspiration from Star Trek and Babylon 5 which are great shows but it might explain why some of you may be a little confused. It's not similar to their story lines but the idea of the setting and similar ideas were based on those shows. I really enjoyed writing this and I hope you enjoy reading it.
If this is late for you then I'm really sorry. Some things made me delay updating but it should be fine. It's 00:05 for me so I'm technically only 5 minutes late, but anyway.
Please send in requests and take care of yourselves.
