Chapter 27

The following morning, you were back in Mephisto's office alongside Yukio, Shura and the rest of your classmates. Mephisto was explaining the mission regarding the hydra and you stared off into the distance, half listening, having heard it all the night before.

"Miss Kirigakure will be accompanying you on this mission as it has the potential to be incredibly dangerous." He explained. "She also has experience with higher ranking demons of this kind and will be an incredible asset to you".

"Alright you lot," Shura started, "You're not to engage with the hydra and if ya spot it, you're to report back to me or Yukio and get out of there. Ya got that?"

You all nodded your heads in acknowledgement. You'd never heard the group so quiet before, the tension was so thick, and you started to feel like you were suffocating from it.

Shura turned her attention to you, "(Y/N), a word in private?" She asked as she pulled you away from the group. "I know you're the same rank as your classmates, but I want ya to keep a close eye on them. Hydras are ferocious and they're very good at taking advantage of their enemies' weaknesses. Since you've had extra lessons with Yukio, I think it's fair to assume that you've got more experience out on the field?" She asked.

You nodded your head. Feeling anxious about being put in a position of such responsibility.

"Don't worry," she said as she gently slapped your arm, "You'll be fine!"

You all left the office and made your way to one of the doors, Yukio pulled out his key and soon you arrived at a temple not too far away from the academy. It was separated from the busy city but was close enough for the sounds of city life to travel on the wind.

Shura raised her voice to the rest of the group, "We will be breaking off into three groups, Yukio, (Y/N) and I will lead those groups and we'll scout around for any signs of the hydra".

Everyone turned their eyes to you, and you smiled awkwardly.

"Rin, Hana and Konekomaru, you'll be with Shura. Ryuji and Izumo, you'll be with me. Shima and Shiemi, you'll be with (Y/N). If you do come into contact with the hydra, do not make eye contact with it! They have the ability to control anyone that looks into their eyes." Yukio explained.

Shima grinned lecherously, "I'm with two hot babes? I'll die happy!"

"Shima!" Bon yelled as Shima laughed playfully, "Did you even hear the part about not looking into its eyes?"

Shima blushed and mumbled in response.

"Mr. Okumura?" Hana asked, "How can a hydra be so hard to find anyway? Aren't they huge demons?"

Yukio pushed his glasses back up his nose and answered calmly, "They can change their shape. If it was parading around in its proper hydra form, we would have found it ages ago, but I believe it has been disguising itself as something more inconspicuous. Sadly, we don't know what that is, but I have faith you'll work that out as a team." He smiled.

"Okay, lets go!" Shura said as her team walked off in one direction. Yukio's team followed briefly then separated off in another direction. Both circling around the temple.

"Alright, well I guess we should start looking in the temple." You suggested. Shima and Shiemi followed your lead.

The temple was very busy with monks and guests getting on with their business, but it was eerily quiet, and you felt the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Something seemed off to you, but you couldn't place it.

"So, (Y/N), what's the plan?" Shima asked, not picking up on the atmosphere.

You placed your fingers on your lips, indicating to your comrades that they should be quiet, "I think we should talk to the monks, ask them what unusual activity they've seen lately." You whispered.
