The first day

What Adeola, the head girl looks like...

I yawn tiredly as i sat down with Tomi on the wooden bench under the cashew tree, the benches were presented by the past graduating students to the school for students to have their recess, they were placed in strategic places round the school.

We waited patiently for Femi, the prefects were having a meeting with the principal and he begged us to wait for him. I don't know why we are waiting because the school as already closed for the day as students are seen moving to their dormitory, but Femi can be really serious when he wants something.

I stare up at the cashew tree, lost in thought. Apart from cashew, other fruits like mangoes, lemons, pawpaws even bananas were planted. The school as a big farm were you will find all this but i can't help but think this particular tree was a mistake as it was planted closer to school building. I heard that students are always warned from climbing the tree, you can pluck with a long stick but no climbing... But trust students na... 'Abi won tii climb ni'..

"This stupid boy should hurry up, i need to freshen up before dinner" Tomi complained, i nodded in agreement because of the lunch we were served. Semovita and ewedu, me... Ewedu, Olorun maje. I rather starve. I hate the soup.

"What are my eyes seeing?" I look down at her to see Tomi staring wearily at an incoming figure. I sit up confused at her words. I look at the direction she was staring at as i saw some of the prefects leaving the school hall where the meeting was situated.

The impending figure happens to be a girl. I take a good look at the girl, who was also in the school uniform, she is a sight for sore eyes, so beautiful, her uniform fits her perfectly. She looks extremely neat, not a speck of dust on her shoes. She stood before us, her face looking serious.

"You must be Teniola Coker" she said sounding formal.

"Of course" I replied also in the same manner. She stares at me as if trying to analyze me, instantly my walls came up. I also stare her down.

Suddenly, she gave me warming smile as my face remain blank with no emotions.

"Adeola Adeyemi... Nice meeting you" she brings out her hand for an handshake as i returned the gesture.

"Teni Coker, as you might have known" I replied, this girl must be one of the power kids in the school with the way she carried herself.

"I am the Head Girl of this prestigious school and as the representative of the female body.. I will like to welcome you... I hope you have a lovely and wonderful stay here"

"Am looking forward to it" my eyes caught the iyun on her wrist as i gave her a fake smile. She nods looking professional, her eyes shifts to Tomi for the first time she got here.

"Ewatomi" her voice drops sounding icy, she nods in greeting as Tomi did the same, what was that?..

"See you around" she said to me as i firmly nod, she turns to walk away but her walk turned to skipping once she caught the sight of Femi who was coming towards us, looking weary. They exchanged a look before she skips away like a ten year old.

Through out our way to the hostel, i told Femi all what happened to day. The same way i briefed Tomi. It's is really nice opening up to my peers, its a been long time i have done this. Its refreshing, mum will be so proud of me. Tomi and Femi kept smiling and laughing.

I told him how the teachers kept staring at me whenever they came to class. The Government teacher asked me if i was sure i was in this class, i told him yes as the student giggled at the interrogation. Femi laughed at my plight. He is in the commercial class so he can't understand because he wasn't present.
