Invalidated

Invalidate me.
You said you never would.
You said that my opinion would always matter,
Yet when I try to speak you laugh.

You make fun of those I hold dear,
Because they once scorned you.
I understand, but you must understand too.

My life is my own.
I cannot leave it at a whim.
They are important to me
And I am important to them.

I try to be honest,
To speak my mind,
But I can't help it
When I bottle it up inside.

I don't want to get angry,
To fight or snarl or glare.
And so I leave,
To avoid falling into a snare.

I would rather see you happy,
Then tell you how I feel.
Because in your mind,
Happiness has been unreal.

And so when I feel invalidated,
I choose to remain silent.
I would rather be dormant,
Than try to stand and fight it.
