A/N: Inspired by Out of the woods by Taylor Swift. I love the song so much. I think if anyone would make us wait, that we will wonder "Are we out of the woods, yet?" with in the Narutoverse, it would be Kakashi. God, how I love that man. Okay I ll stop rambling!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You woke up early today, it was a very important day for all of Konoha. The Hokage ceremony. You get ready in your dress robes. You still work for the intelligence department but you arent in active combat anymore. The Hokage mansion was decorated and this time the whole of the village was. You admire the view from your window of the Hokage rock and all of the faces on it, and sigh to yourself as you sip your tea. You all have been through a lot. you think to yourself. Kakashi and you lived a house away from each other. You were naturally friends before you knew what being friends meant. You had lost your parents the year after you were born so you lived with your grandmother while Kakashi lived with his father. Kakashi and you were the academy together and looked up to his father, the white fang of the leaf. He cared for you, too. But when he committed suicide, it changed Kakashi. He stopped being a kid. At the age of 5, he was already a recluse and wasn't the same person anymore. He stopped hanging out with you and started training much much harder. You tried to keep up with him, training with him to just be a part of his life but it was no use. He was way better than you as much as you tried working hard, and he soon left you behind. He graduated the academy and became a chunin and part of team Minato. You became a chunin about 3 years after him. Once part of team Minato he started becoming a bit of his self again, the casual nods of the past started becoming conversations again. You knew if you needed him, he will be there for you, but he wasnt a part of your life anymore. The conversations were usually about trainings, missions and how important was to complete the mission for the sake of the village. But just when you thought you were finally able to catch up with him again, he lost his team mate - Obito, followed by his other teammate Rin. It was followed by the attack on the leaf by the nine tailed fox which killed his sensei. You lost your grandmother in that attack as well as your comrades. You could understand his pain severely this time around but neither of you were in any mindset for conversations. You only met at the KIA stone. You mourning your comrades, him mourning his. Neither you had anyone left neither did he. He went ahead and joined the ANBU whereas you remained in the shinobi force of the leaf, now a jonin practicing to be in the ANBU. You werent sure if you wanted to be a part of the black ops but some of the seniors had recommended you for it given your skills and you didn't have anything else to look forward to either.
One day while you were sitting near the stone you heard someone shuffle around and saw Kakashi walking by. You get up dusting your pants."I can come by later", he says starting to turn around."No I have to be somewhere. I was just leaving", you say."Okay", he replies. You both stare at the stone together for a moment before you speak. "This is the only place we meet these days, I guess", you say."Not a good place to meet alive comrades", he gives a hollow laugh."They don't teach you how to joke in the ANBU?", you ask him mocking his weak attempt at making a joke before.He gives a side smile under his mask."I will be joining the ANBU soon too", you say trying to keep the conversation on."Did they find enough darkness in you?", Kakashi asked."It seems so, I start next week", you reply.A comfortable silence follows. You had spent hours in each others silence, reading, studying, practicing without words, just content with each others presence."I found some of your father's books at my place sometime ago, I was cleaning. I thought you would want them back", you said."I think he would want you to keep it", he replies."If you say so", you say lighting up a cigarette. You don't usually smoke except at the stone, maybe being friends with Asuma had rubbed off on you."You shouldn't really smoke you know", he said quietly."Depression kills more people than cigarettes but yet here we both are", you laugh and smoke in silence for a couple of minutes.You butt out the cigarette and look at him.His eyes are focused on the stone."Kakashi...", you start and trail off. He doesnt acknowledge it his eyes still on the stone.His one hand is in pocket while the other is on his side. You lightly hold his free hand and squeeze it. And then you are gone. He exhales heavily, leaving the breath he didn't know he was holding. You recognize the darkness in your own heart losing everyone you had. Kakashi was your first friend and all you could do was see him go further and further away.The next time you and Kakashi have a conversation is when he is appointed as the jonin leader of a group of ninjas. You were sent to another village in the Land of Fire for a long term mission and you had just returned. You go to the memorial stone and there he is. You realize the only time you actually feel anything, for anyone, at all, is when you see Kakashi at the memorial stone. You get concerned, worried and seek to reach out to him but it is like seeing in the mirror, and anything you say to him applies to you too, making you a hypocrite."Heard you are getting a team of your own", you say lighting your cigarette. He looks back at you, his one visible eye is red. You wonder if he was crying, or is just deprived of sleep, either way, you dont say anything to him.His eyebrow twitches for a fleeting second looking at you smoking,"Yes, I tried not to. I don't know a thing about being their sensei", he says."Minato sensei was always proud of you, Kakashi", you say with a closed eye smile.You both could see through each others fake smiles, or half hearted attempts at small talks, but you did it anyway."We don't know about that", he almost whispers."Is Naruto his son?", you ask. Neither of you are looking at each other, his eyes fixated at Obito's name and your eyes at your parents' and your comrades names."Yes", he replies. you just sigh.You were about to say "you would do well", but you knew he wouldn't really respond to that so you drop it. You both stay in silence, almost like a recurring event of your meets. You finally butt out your cigarette, hold his hand and squeeze it reassuringly and leave. ~~ time skip ~~Sasuke leaving the village had devastated Kakashi. He had tried his best to make him stronger and to keep him on the good path but he had failed, which meant he now blames himself for it.You couldnt help but wonder what Kakashi must be going through. You wanted to see him, but that meant showing him that you care, and somehow that made you uncomfortable. You thought that'll make him uncomfortable too. Was it too coward of you to not show him that you were concerned? That he had someone to reach out to? Maybe you were. So you creepily watched him from a distance to make sure he is okay. That was all you could do. What you didn't realize is he was doing the same for you. So when Asuma was killed by Hidan, he had seen you break down and wail in private, he knew that the ANBU mask wasnt just for your face, but also for your emotions. He made sure that Lady Tsunade doesn't grant you the permission to set out on your own to avenge him. You got the information that Shikamaru and Kakashi would be amongst the team going out to fight Hidan and Kakuzu and you could breathe a little easy. You went to the Leaf Village gate to see them leaving for the mission but you do not approach them. You see Kakashi glance at you and you both give a slight nod. He meets you at the stone after they are back from defeating them and sees you smoking what seemed like the 5th cigarette because he sees 4 cig butts lying around. Your hair is disheveled and it looked like you had cried for days. You were back from the mission that ended up unexpectedly brutally and you scared even your ANBU comrades with your violence. You made it a point to resign as soon as you got back without even thinking about where you'll be assigned next."We got them", he says softly and sat close to you."He shouldn't be gone, I shouldn't be staring at his name", you whimper.He was your best friend growing up after Kakashi and he kept you sane with his bright and cheery personality. You couldn't believe he is gone. You light up your 6th cig and Kakashi looks at you alarmed. He swiftly takes the packet out of your hand as well as the one cig in your mouth and butts it out."I think that should be enough for today", he says."He shouldn't be up there, he shouldn't be. He was going to be a father, he shouldn't be up there", you shake your head in disapproval like you are rejecting reality. "What am I going to do now?", you stare at Kakashi blankly your eyes blank and tears threatening to fall."We are shinobi. We face death everyday. All we can do is keep our comrades memories alive in us", he says half believing it and half faking it himself."Kakashi...", you say standing up with your fist curled up in a ball in anger he could almost hear your knuckles cracking with the force. "You will get away with saying that because you are you. You fought the same enemy that killed Asuma, and came back alive. You could've been hurt, you could've been dead. If I am here and I see your name on that effing stone, I am going to revive you and kill you again. And if someone tells me to keep your memories in my heart, I would kill them too", you say through gritted teeth.Kakashi was now standing next to you, afraid and confused."Y/N.... I....", he starts but you punch him hard in the gut and he is thrown back while you throw three kunai towards him at the same time. He falls on his back and the kunais miss him by mere inches the last one cutting a few of his hair off. You are panting and staring at him tears streaming down your face."You missed", he says to you, his sane mind questioning his own unnecessary courage to say something like that."YOU WOULD'VE BEEN DEAD IF I HAD MISSED", you scream at him and run away.He wanted to stop you but he knows better than to do that. He would be lying to himself if we had said he didn't want to run up to you and hug you at that moment. He would be lying if he had said he didn't want to wipe your tears and be there for you in silence like you had been for him all these years. Like you had watched over him from a distance. "I ll try not to be up there, Y/N, but I can't promise you that", he thinks to himself, glad to see that you still had your temper. During the fourth shinobi war, you were in the fourth division under Gaara and Shikamaru because of your long range fighting abilities. So you did not meet Kakashi at all since the start of the war. There was nothing there to say especially since the destruction of leaf village by Pain. You do not even see Kakashi till after six months as everyone has vastly different duties after the war and bringing the shinobi world back on its feet. Even when you see each other it is usually a courteous nod or just a smile. As the days passed you felt like he had a glint of longing in his eyes everytime you passed each other by but couldn't wait to talk about anything other than the task at hand. Kakashi was also suggested to be the next Hokage so he had a lot of catching up to do before he could assume the position from Tsunade. You were working hard with Shikamaru to build up the intelligence division again and to organize the existing intels and scrolls.As another day ended and you returned to your house, that was barely used these days. As you change and lie down in your bed, all you could think of was Kakashi and his eyes. Both of his eyes were visible again and you couldnt shake off the feeling they did want to tell you something. "He isn't the type, he is always into his work and his perverted novels", you think. "Maybe you feel he is longing to tell you something because you are longing to tell something to him", the tiny voice in your head wouldnt stop saying. You tried shoving that thought under the rug but you realized since you had been through a full blown war, twice in your life, it had changed you. You longed for simpler things, the smell of the ground after the rain, a game of cards with your friends (most of whom aren't in this world anymore), sharing your silence with a certain someone. "It isn't the time, though", you think to yourself. "When is it time then? If not after a war? Once the village is reorganized? Once he becomes the Hokage? WHEN?", you almost scream to yourself. You had a burning feeling in your heart that you were too familiar with. You aren't bleeding but you feel the wounds. You run to the memorial stone in the middle of the night, not able to think of anything else to do. Kakashi finds you curled up in a fetal position and asleep there in the morning at sunrise."Hey, wake up", he softly calls out to you. You open your eyes and look at him, forgetting where you were you look at him confused. "Are you hurt, Y/N?", he asks concerned."No, I couldn't sleep in my bed. The silence was too loud", you say and get up to sit against the tree nearby."You shouldn't really sleep here in the middle of nowhere though", he says and sits next to you. You want to hold him so bad that you almost immediately had a lump in your throat. You talk about the usual subjects for some time, just polite small talk about the village and countries and reconstructions and such. You realize you need to head back so you can get ready for your work soon, so you get up stretching, Your body is really stiff from sleeping outside."So you are going to be the next Hokage, huh", you say still stretching not looking at him. "So they say", he replies looking at your form and taking all of you in.You feel his gaze on you so you suddenly turn your head to look at him. He looks away the same instant but not after you have already caught him looking."This means I can wake up to your face everyday", you say now moving right next to him staring in the direction he is staring."Huh?", he looks at you."On the rock. The Hokage Rock is directly visible from my window", you add quickly just to see his reaction."Hmm", he says. That was the limit of your flirting so it was almost like you get the clue he doesnt want to pursue it further."Well I'll take your leave, Hokage-sama", you say and turn around to leave when you hear him saying your name almost a whisper."Y/N...". You turn around and look at him with an eyebrow raised. "I hope you understand", hIs voice sounds pained."I won't if you don't tell me, Kashi", you reply. "It is... not the right time", he says. "We just went through a war, and came out alive. I don't know a better time and if at all there is one", you add almost sighing. Mad at him, mad at yourself for wanting this, just mad at the situation, really. Maybe he is scared but you are too! He finally looks at you apologetically. Your eyes start welling up with tears but you hold his hand lightly and give it a squeeze like you usually do. This time you feel his fingers lingering on yours a whole second more setting your entire being on fire. You turn around to leave the second time though and he doesn't stop you. He doesn't follow you and the next time you meet him even though with others around, he doesn't show any sign of recognition than usual. An extra second of his hold was enough to light you on fire and the lack of an extra nod from him was enough to break your heart into million pieces. You found your behavior increasingly childish and did your best to not let it affect your work. It was his turn now.
The entire village is celebrating Naruto becoming the Hokage. Every person in the village is celebrating the hero that stood before them. He had been hated on but adored now, he had saved the village and the world. He was really a Hokage loved by ninjas and civilians alike. Once the ceremony was over and everyone was dispersed you were walking towards the cemetery, and the training grounds in general. You had almost developed a Pavlovian response to those places now, where you could clear your head as soon as you started walking in that direction. You were alone, it was nice. You sit under the tree and rest your head, and fall asleep. You wake up to Kakashi sitting next to you. "You have to stop sleeping here", he chuckles. the tiny bags under his eyes the proof of the years passed and the events endured. "It is relaxing actually you should try it", you say. "I ll pass, i am grateful to have a roof over my head", he says. "Still no humor, I see", you say closing your eyes again. You want to talk to him, its been years but it still doesn't change how he can make you feel. Everyone is grown up, the younger generation has kids now, Asuma's kid is all grown up, and here you are. Still not over the small talks. Your train of thoughts is broken when you hear Kakashi say "All of them have sure grown up.""Yes they have. they have families now, it is like they were just born. It is time for us to take a back seat now, let the new ones take the reign. After all they were the ones who brought peace", you say.
"You aren't retiring anytime soon are you?", he asks.
"Doesn't seem likely, though I'll gladly let anyone take my place if they are competent enough, till then I'll hang on to mine", you laugh.
"Just hope this younger generation has a better fate than we did, though most have been through a lot already", you add. He nods in agreement. You get up to leave and dust your robes. He stands up, too.
"I hope you will be talking care of yourself now that you are not the Hokage anymore, yeah?", you ask holding his hand now.
"Yes I will", he says and you squeeze it softly and leave like you usually do.
He doesn't let go this time though. You look at him, and see him looking down at you. You arch your eyebrow waiting for an explanation.
"Thank you and sorry", he says looking at you with warmth and sadness in his eyes.
"What for?"
"For looking out for me, all these years. and sorry, for not watching over you", he says looking at where his hand was holding yours.
"It is okay, what we did or we didn't was our destiny, destiny of the others around us", you say. "We can change our own destiny though, like Naruto says. but not everyone is brave enough to do that, it is not an easy thing to do", you continue and look at him with a closed eye smile.
"You are right", he says nodding his head. He brings his face down and takes his mask off to place a shy kiss on your lips. You are surprised and shocked and excited like a 14 year old all at once. But you cannot believe he did that so you just blankly stare at him for an explanation. "I know it is late and I have made you wait but if you'll still have me, I don't want to be a coward anymore", he says looking at you with his unmasked face and earnest eyes. It takes you moment to realize what he is saying, after all these years. You stare at him to make sure it is not a joke or it is not a dream but actually happening. You lift your hand to trace the scar on his face almost to make sure that he really is in front of you saying those things. He holds your hand and kisses your fingers. You look at him kissing your hand and look back at him. You know this is real after all these years. Now all you can do is nod at him and lean in. He leans in again and this time you kiss him back. He holds your waist to slightly pull you forward and you hold his face to deepen the kiss.
Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet? Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet? In the clear yet, good
