ღ chapter eleven
( strange encounters )JULES KNEW HOW to avoid her problems. It was a stubborn talent she'd possessed since she was a child, when she'd not been able to finish her math homework. Instead of actually doing the work, or asking for help, she barricaded herself in her room, and her mother had blown the door to pieces in an attempt to get in, because the unlocking charm had not worked.
She'd been holed up in Ravenclaw tower like a miserable mess for whole weekend, only sneaking out to sneak food back upstairs during mealtimes. She was smoking like a chimney, which she knew her lungs would kill her for, eventually giving out on her one day as they continued to blacken with the serrated ashes.
The moonlight was calming for her as it streamed through the windows and bathed her in its aura, barely filtering through her periwinkle curtains. Her roommates are asleep. Besides Padma, a faint glow of her wand emitting from the curtains, along with the rustling of paper. She was always studying, and at this point, Jules' motivation was already beginning to slump.
She dug her wand out from under her pillow and stuffed it in the pockets of her trousers, glancing around to make sure no one saw her before sneaking out of the dormitory. She's quiet as a mouse on her way down the stairs to the common room, but nearly knocks over a bust of Rowena Ravenclaw, hissing filthy words, when she's caught.
"You shouldn't be out of bed."
Jules turned around. Shit.
She relaxed when she saw who it was. Luna Lovegood was always lost in her own dreamworld, a figment of her imagination. She had clear blue eyes, white-blonde hair, and was always mumbling about some creature Jules had never even heard of. "Luna, why are you down here? It's late."
"Looking for moon frogs," she answered dreamily. "Is something bothering you?"
Jules sunk into an overstuffed armchair, tapping her fingers on the suede material. "Just found out some stuff about my family that I didn't like."
"My mum died when I was nine. Right in front of me. So I get it," Luna answered quietly, and rather abruptly, instantly changing the mood of the conversation. "It's rather sad, but you get used to it."
Jules smiled, fidgeting quietly. "Please don't tell- I'm sneaking into a friend's dorm room."
She was lying through her teeth with sugarcoated lies, and poor Luna, who trusted everyone, fell for it. "Visiting Potter? He fell from quite a height during Quidditch today, didn't even break his glasses."
