the sound of music

The sound of Caroline's black platforms making contact with the stone floor echoed, the clear sound bouncing off the walls. Her blonde hair flew behind her gracefully and the little colorful flowers intertwined with some of her locks managed to stay in place as the girl sped down the corridor.

"Caroline Kenna Pettigrew, get your ass back here!" Lily Evans screamed angrily, running after her best friend. The fiery redhead ran through the empty halls and she followed the trail of sound of Caroline's shoes clacking.

Caroline turned her perfect face slightly to see Lily's small figure gradually become larger by the second. Caroline felt the ground underneath her become softer and the long grass brushed past her ankles as she ran to the middle of the Quidditch field.

The ethereal girl started twirling in circles and her white dress lifted a bit as a breeze of wind passed her ever so slightly. Lily stopped running when she set foot on the field and watched the girl spinning around adorably, her previous anger suddenly fading. The redhead put her hands in her jean pockets and slowly walked over to Caroline.

"Care, what the bloody hell are you doing?" Lily shouted towards the blonde, slowly walking towards her. Caroline stopped spinning for just a moment and spread her arms out as if she were welcoming her best friend.

"I'm recreating the Sound of Music. Would you care to join?" Caroline's airy voice flowed through Lily's ears and the redhead couldn't help but break out into a wide smile.

"This is nothing like the Sound of Music," Lily stated but smiled nonetheless. Caroline grinned lazily and walked closer to Lily, grabbing both of her hands.

"This is exactly how I'd imagine it though," Caroline laughed lightly, causing Lily to laugh. "First the camera starts from over there," the blonde girl explained, pointing to the stands. "And it zooms in on me and then moves to you."

"Oh yeah?" Lily mocked. She couldn't help but smile adoringly at Caroline as she pointed to the stands with a furrowed brow on her heart-shaped face. Lily could see the gears turning in her mind as Caroline bit her lip in thought. "What happens next, Care?"

Caroline's face brightened as she remembered what happened next in her version of the Sound of Music. "Then, Lils, we dance," Caroline exclaimed.

She held onto Lily's hands as they jumped and twirled around. "Merlin, we must look so stupid," Lily laughed. "There isn't even any bloody music!"

"That's the point!" Caroline giggled. "Now we just have to wait for the sound!"

"What the bloody hell are you two doing?" a voice cut through Caroline's laughter, causing both girls to stop dancing. Lily's happiness was drained from the curly-haired boy who shouted and Caroline let go of the redhead's hands.

"None of your business, Potter," Lily scowled. The boy dressed in a Gryffindor quidditch uniform trudged towards the two with a broom in his right hand and a crate tucked under his left arm.

"I think it is, Lily-flower. My team needs to practice," James explained and shook the crate of Quaffles for emphasis. His light brown eyes were trained on the beautiful 5th year before him but he continued to acknowledge the girl standing next to her. "Hi Pettigrew."

"Hello James," Caroline greeted in a kinder and softer tone than James had. She held her hand out in front of her and opened it to reveal a small flower blooming in her palm. "Would you like a flower?"

James smiled slightly at the blonde but shook his head 'no'. Caroline shrugged her small shoulders and carelessly placed the flower in her hair near all the other flowers. "My dearest Lily-flower, would you consider going to-

"No," Lily responded coldly, her voice level and stern. James licked his bottom lip quickly and opened his mouth to respond or possibly ask her again but Lily cut him off again. "I said no. Not now, not tomorrow, not the day after that. Never."

Lily began to storm off the field and he watched her walk away with a certain sadness in his normally bright eyes. The bespectacled boy turned towards Lily's best friend for help but Caroline shrugged lazily with a genuine smile on her face. "You'll get her one day," Caroline assured. "I saw it in my crystal ball in Divination."

James opened his mouth to reply but Caroline had already skipped off in the same direction as Lily. Wordlessly, the Gryffindor Chaser waved at the rest of his Quidditch team, motioning for them to come over.

---------------

Caroline's head shot up at the sound of laughter entering the Great Hall and she smiled to herself although she wasn't aware of the joke. The loud group of 5th years made their way to the Gryffindor table and seated themselves next to Caroline and Lily.

"Evans," James greeted dreamily then turned towards Caroline respectfully. "Pettigrew."

Caroline responded softly, copying James' greeting. "Potter."

Remus Lupin, who had taken the seat next to Caroline, nervously smiled at her. Caroline didn't seem to notice him at all and she turned back to face Lily. The sandy-haired boy subconsciously tugged at the side of his worn-out robe as he watched Lily and Caroline talk about nothing and everything at the same time.

For Remus, time felt like it slowed whenever he was near her. But for some reason, everything around them sped up when he admired her. After contemplating with himself for what felt like 10 minutes, Remus mustered up enough courage to ask the pretty girl to Hogsmeade.

Before he could even say her name, Remus felt someone nudge his shoulder. The sandy-haired boy turned at the movement and Sirius Black looked at him expectantly. "Come on, Moony. We've got to go. Pranking doesn't wait all night for us," he urged.

Remus' eyes squinted as he glanced at the large clock positioned by the exit of the Great Hall. "Is it 8:30 already? It hardly felt like 10 minutes," Remus muttered. He was proven wrong because the clock read 8:35 and when he glanced around the hall, he noticed half of the seats were empty.

"Yes," Sirius grumbled. "Now come on! Peter and James are going to go without us!" He pulled Remus to his feet and hastily stepped out of the bench. As he left the Great Hall, Remus turned back to the Gryffindor girl who was chatting with Lily.

At that moment, Caroline's head turned to face Remus and a small smile appeared on her face. Remus wanted to go back to the table and ask her to Hogsmeade next weekend but he didn't fight as he felt himself be pulled out of the Great Hall.
