"I won't let you, un!" Deidara quipped, dragging his bleeding legs to stand before Sakura to protect her, and yet, from the corner of his sole eye he could see her pushing herself up onto her two, fragile feet. "What are you doing, you can't fight."
She collected a few of Konan's special papers, and removed one of Yahiko's piercings. Green eyes flickered into multiple direction to stop the tears that dared to fall once again.
"Tou-san, Kaa-san.... They're dead."
Grinning, Obito nestled his body into a fighting stance. "And you're next."
"Sakura, just let me kill him. Please." Deidara plopped back down, pleading─ tears dwelling in his own eye.
"Kaa-san died while fighting him, we can't beat him."
The Sakura Deidara knew from a few months ago wouldn't have said something so despairing.
"Is' my turn."
Sakura of Amegakure was a courageous girl with a life she never deserved─ she was ignored, tortured, treated poorly, and for the few months she finally managed to spend in ease, she was taken away and suffered alone once again. She didn't need to be the one who suffered so much, but here she was.
Deidara understood Sakura's resolve, but that didn't mean that he agreed with it.
"You can always give life another try, don't.... Die." he pleaded, pulling her into a tight hug as if this were to be their last. She was dying inside and she was amazing at keeping it between the curve of her lips─ he regret not staring into her eyes more often.
"I can't, is' too hard now."
He could feel the tears sinking into his shirt.
"Inoichi-san tol' me I have a sickness an' we can't treat it." she admitted. "I don' have parents, everyone hates me in the village 'cept for Kakashi-san an' you guys. I don' have that much time so if I die today, then is' okay."
Why did it have to be Sakura?
He grabbed onto her shoulders, "You're not going to die today, not on my watch!" He tutted. "Your mom just died to save you, you can't let her death fall in vain dammit!"
He regret shouting at her the moment those shadows under her eyes seemed to visibly darken, if that was even possible. He could see the way she had given up in her eyes─ what was once jade green turned into something darker, something he couldn't recognize and he cursed himself for not being able to do something about it.
He lost Sakura before she even died.
How could he ask her to stay alive if she was already gone, and he was nipping at the last bit that remained in this world. A ghost, a phantom─ perhaps just a part of her soul that couldn't join the rest of her in the world of the dead.
Sakura was dead.
His head slowly ducked down, squeezing his eye shut from the pain. "I'm sorry, Sakura."
She forced a smile to her lips. "Is' okay, I know you jus' wanted ta' help."
"I think the sickness starts with a 'c.'" she paused. "I remember now, is' chronic fatigue syndrome I think."
