After classes, I walk towards my locker and take out the book about the bad villains and their weapons and stuff. The book is literally called 'Villains and their way of hurting people'. Lovely title I know. I put my bag in the locker and walk towards the fencing room. "All right, boys let's line it up." I hear Jay say when I enter. I am standing on one of the sides of the fencing room. It's a circle with a soft mat on the ground. In the middle of the mat, there is a yellow compass printed on it. There are standing blue and yellow striped boxes in a circle on the edge of the compass. You can watch what is happening in the circle on three different layers that go around the mat. I am currently standing on the bottom layer which I am very happy about because I spot Jane on the third. Don't get me wrong, I really like Jane but every time I run into her she has more dicissions for me to make.
"Carlos, you're with me, let's go." Jay says as the boys all line up in rows of two. "Assamble." Jay says and they point the swords forward. "Salute!" he says and they put their swords vertically in front of their face's. "Lower the point." he says and they lower their swords to the ground. "Masks down." he says and they all put their masks on. "En grade." he says and they all get ready and stand in their fighting position. And then they charge at each other. "Keep your center." Jay says as he grabs Carlos's arm and spins him around towards the middle of the mat. He slides after him and Carlos reaches back, but Jay blocks his strike with his own sword. "Eyes on your opponent." Jay says and Carlos spins around. "Up and over." Jay says and Carlos jumps up and lands which each foot on a different block. Jay slides through his legs and while Jay does that Carlos makes a summersault of the blocks. After Jay slides through Carlos's legs he quickly gets up since there is another fencer in that circle. All the fencers are now in the circle. Some of them fall out of the circle since they are hit so technically out. Jay and Carlos are the last two left and Jay pushes Carlos's sword away and is about to deliver the final blow when somebody else springs in. He blocks Jay and spins around and almost hits him on the back, but Jay spins out of the way. They face each other and Jay takes off his helmet. It's clear that the newcomer isn't part of the team. "Get him, Jay." Carlos says. They are circling each other and the mysterious person has his back towards me. I put my hands around my mouth. "Let's go mystery person." I yell. Jay shifts his gaze towards me. "Seriously Kara?" he says. "Kick his ass." I yell. "Thanks for the support." Jay says sarcastically to me and looks back towards the mystery person. Carlos walks over to me. "Seriously?" he asks. "It would be good for his ego." I say and we start watching together.
The mystery person charges at Jay, but he blocks the blows. Then the person spins around in a circle and kicks out his foot. Jay ducks backward so that his face doesn't get hit. Everybody gasps at the move. They continue fighting. Jay tries to wipe the feet out from under the person but he steps back and makes a one-handed cartwheel out of the way. "Watch out, Jay." Carlos says as the person's feet almost hit's Jay in the face. The person strikes but Jay blocks once again. They move closer to each other. "Nice!" Jay says and they push each other away. They start fighting again, blocking each other's blows. Jay blocks a blow by putting his sword behind his back, but the person grabs his sword by the handle. Jay's hand slips off the handle so now he has lost his sword. He turns around to face the person and is a bit shocked. "Oh, Jay, what happened?" Carlos says. The person starts to swing towards his waist, playing with him. "Finish him." I say. "Really Kara?" Jay says as he keeps stepping backward, avoiding the blows. Then the person puts out one sword in front of him and Jay kicks it out of his hand with his foot. He catches the sword, swings it a few times around himself, and swings it over his shoulder where he lets his arm rest, signaling that he is done fighting. The mystery person takes off their helmet. A lot of black hair comes out first and the person which is obviously a girl swings her head around, freeing her hair. She then looks at Jay. It's Lonnie. "Let's go Lonnie!" I yell as I cheer. Many people follow my lead and start clapping. Carlos covers his left ear. "Could you not yell in my ear." he says and I laugh. "I stood on the good side. She obviously beat his ass." I say as I lean forward, putting my arms on the railing and leaning on them so that my head is beside Carlos's. He lets out a growl and I laugh once again.
"Not bad." Jay says. "You should put me on the team." she says. "Yes!" I say. Jay looks at me and smiles, then he looks back at her. "Hey...What?" Chad says and he walks towards them. "No, no, no. We'll be the laughing stock of the league." he says as he looks skeptically at her. "And what's gonna happen next? We'll have girls playing tourney. Come on, guys." he says. I growl. I apologized for saying those mean things about him and his parents during the party after the coronation, but this guy still gets under my nerves. "So?" Jay asks. "So? So have you not read the rulebook?" Chad asks as he pulls out the rulebook from his back pocket. I roll my eyes. There is that stupid rulebook again. "Section 2, Paragraph 3, 11-4." he says as he turns to the right page and shows it to Jay. "A team will be comprised of a captain and eight men." he reads and shows it to Lonnie and everyone. "You should read the rulebook." he says as he turns back to Jay. "Okay, yeah, but you're down a man. You know, since Ben had to leave to do all that king stuff." Lonnie argues. "Exactly. We're down a man." Chad says. "Jay." Lonnie says despiratly. "I'm sorry. Coach trusts me. I'm not gonna stay captain if I just throw out the rulebook." Jay says. "If my mother thought that way, she would have lost the war." Lonnie says. Chad scoffs. "Okay." he says. Lonnie walks away a bit defeated, but I know she will find a way around it. I mean it's Lonnie.
"Alright, guys. Practice is over, let's go." Jay says and everybody starts to walk away. "Carlos this is your chance." I say to him. "What do you mean?" he asks as he turns to face me. "Jane is standing right there." I say as I point towards the third floor. "So?" he asks a bit nervous. "Ask her to go with you to Cotillion." I say as I push him forward. He looks back at me. "You are just saving your own ass so you can walk out of here before she asks you something." he says. "Go!" I say. He turns around and jumps on one of the blocks. "Jane. Jane, hey." he says before she walks away. Jay walks towards me. "You seriously couldn't have my back?" he asks but I shus him and point at Carlos and Jane. He joins my side and we watch the interaction between them. "Hey, Carlos, what's up?" Jane asks. "Uh..." he says and he looks back at me. I put two thumbs in the air. "Not much. You?" he says. "Way too much. We were gonna go with the blue and gold banner of Cotillion, but now we can't find the right shade of blue." she says. "Oh, yeah. No, that's a bummer. Maybe you should ask Kara." he says as he shoots me a look. I look angrily at him. He is saying that to get back at me. "That's a great idea." Jane says enthusiastically and writes something down on her tablet. "Um, speaking of Cotillion..." Carlos starts. "I know, right?" Jane interrupts him. "It's all anybody is talking about. Cotillion 24/7. It's like they've never been to one before." Jane says. "Uh...I haven't, actually." Carlos says. "Oh...Lucky. I always end up serving punch with my mom anyway. This year I got stuck on the decorating committee because Audrey went off to a spa vacation with Flora, Fauna and Merryweather." she says. Carlos glances back at us and I nod. "Jane, maybe we should just..." he says. "Skip the whole ting?" she interrupts him and scoffs. "I really, really wish I could. It's so nice to have a friend who's on the same wavelength." she says as she throws an air punch at him. Carlos grabs to his shoulder. "Ow, you got me." he says and they both chuckle. Then Jane's cellphone rings. "I gotta go." she says as she picks it up. "Great practice though." she says. "Yeah." Carlos says. "See you." she says as she walks away. Carlos looks back at us and I raise my brows. "It wasn't the right time, alright?" he says. "Of course." I say. He jumps off the block and towards us.
"So Jay." I say and look at him. "You totally got your ass beaten by Lonnie." I say. "No, I let her win." he says. "Of course you did." I say and I look at Carlos. We both start laughing. "Okay, stop it you two." he says and we start walking. "About that. Thanks for having my back." he says. "Ow come on. I can't fuel your ego forever." I say. "And let's face it. Fencing, isn't your best quality." I say. "What?!" he says as he turns towards me. Carlos lets out a laugh. "Yeah, I think you should just stick to tourney." I say seriously. He shoves me in the shoulder. "You're so funny." he says. "Ugh, I know." I say and the three of us laugh. We reach there dorm and stop in front of the door. "Okay so we're gonna change." Jay says as he opens the door. "You better take a shower to because you guys stink." I say. "Hey!" they say. But before they can get to me I am already running. "See you guys later." I say as I run towards my dorm.
When I enter Mal is sitting on her bed drawing. "Hey Mal." I say as I close the door behind me and throw the book about villains and their way to hurt people on my bed. "Hey Kara." she says, not looking up from her scetch. "Did you prepare for you picnic with Ben?" she asks. Right, already forgot that. Gosh I really need to start putting reminders in my phone. "Yes." I say. "I am about to go to the kitchen." I say as I walk into the bathroom. I look at myself in the mirror and take my hair out of the ponytail. Better. I walk out of the bathroom and grab the book from my bed. I open it at the page where I left my bookmark and walk towards the door. "I'm off now." I say. "Wait!" Mal says before I can open the door. "You said you were going to the kitchen?" she asks. "Yes." I say. "Can you stop by the guys' room and give this to Carlos?" she asks as she hands me a small pink tin. I frown. "I don't have time to drop by because I really need to finish this drawing for the assignment Mrs. Miller has given me and-" she starts. "It's okay." I interrupt her. I open the tin and there is a red gummy inside of it. "What is it?" I ask. "It's a potion so Carlos will say the truth." she says. "And you made this with your spell book." I say raising my eyebrows at her. "Hey!" she says a bit offended. "He just asked me to help and the spell book isn't in the museum yet so I said yes." she says. "Okay, okay." I say holding up my arms, almost dropping the book. I close the tin and walk towards the door. "Ow, before you give it to him remind him of the fact that the truth gummy will make him say the whole truth, all the time, no matter what." she says. "Right." I say and I walk out of the door. I close it behind me and walk towards the boys' dorm.
I am reading the book while I am walking and suddenly I hear these clicking sounds. "Kara, Kara." many people say my name. I close the book and look behind me. The press is standing in the school hallways behind me. My eyes whiden and I turn around and start walking. They run after me and I start running. "Kara, Kara. Over here." they say. Why can't these people leave me alone? Yeez, is it to much to ask for some privacy. I open the door to the boys' dorm and close it before anyone can get inside. I lean against the door and let out a breath. I lock it and starts pacing in the room. I have to do something to get rid of these people. "Kara must be counting the days until the Royal Cotillion when she will officially become a Lady of the Court." a reporter says. I look at the TV and see the same broadcast they showed earlier this morning. I grab the remote and push the off button a few times. When the TV is finally off I start pacing again and I am panting. Not only because I just ran from the press but because I am getting really angry. I mean come on people. Something surges to me again and I take a deep breath as I close my eyes. When I let the breath out a wave of fatigue washes over me and I put my right hand on the table for support.
"Whoa." Carlos says. I look up and see Carlos sitting on his bed with his laptop on his lap. "Easy, girl." he says as he closes the laptop. "What?" I say irritated. "You think this is so easy?" I yell as I walk towards him. "You don't have people taking a photo of you every single time you open your mouth to say 'boo'!" I say as I stop beside his bed. He leans back a bit as he looks at me with wide eyes, his mouth slightly open. "I mean, it's not that I could even say 'boo' but, you know..." I say and I sigh. "I'm sorry." he says as he pouts. "Carlos, don't you ever miss screaming at people and just making them run away from you?" I ask. "You're thinking of my mother. And I was usually on the other end of that. So, no not really. No." he says. "Right. Sorry." I say as I let out a breath. "Hey, it's okay." he says as he gets up from the bed and stands before me. "That's what everyone keeps saying, but they don't have to go through what I am going through." I mumble. "Come here." he says and pulls me in for a hug. He pulls back and looks at me. "So, what brings you here?" he asks. "Oh, right." I say as I pull the pink tin out of my pocket. Suddenly the lock clicks open and the door creaks as it opens. Carlos and I both look towards the door. Chad is slowly walking inside, looking into the hallway if anybody sees him enter the room. Then he softly closes the door and walks inside, thinking he is the man. He sees us standing there looking at him and his mouth drops. "Hi." he says and chuckles. "Just came to use your 3-D printer. Won't be a sec." he says as he walks towards it. "How'd you get a key to my room?" Carlos asks. "Oh, I printed it off last time I was in here." he says. Carlos and I look at each other and frown. "You guys were sleeping." Chad says. A smile creeps on my face. That's kind of wicked, I didn't know Chad had it in him. "Look, I just...Your printer's so much better than mine. And you installed these hacks. And everything runs so much smoother than mine." he says and I start to chuckle at his hopelessness. "Out." Carlos says as he points towards the door. "Now." he says when Chad doesn't move. "Fine. Fine." Chad says and he starts walking away. "Chad." Carlos says before he can open the door. "What?" he says as he turns back around. "Leave the key." Carlos says. He scoffs and puts the key on the table. He walks towards the door and has his hand on the handle. "Chad, could you tell me if he press is still out there?" I ask then he opens the door. But he doesn't have to answer for me since I hear the clicking of camera's the moment he opens the door and the reporters calling my name. "Yes. They are here." he says and then walks out of the room, closing the door behind him.
"Kara." Carlos says as I stare at the floor. "Mmm?" I hum in response. "Why are you here?" he asks. "Oh, yeah right." I say as I open the tin and take out the truth gummy. "Mal asked me to give this to you on my way to the kitchen." I say. "Yes. My potion." he says. "So, this thing will make me say what I really feel to Jane?" he asks. "So that is what you want the potion for. Now I get it." I say. "Kara." he says. "Yes. This is a truth gummy." I say. "Perfect." he says and he moves his hand to take it from me. "Wait." I say before I can take it. "Mal asked me to remind you of the fact that you will be saying the truth all the time, no matter what." I say. "I'll take my chances." Carlos says. "But really Carlos?" I ask as I let my arm drop to my side. Dude jumps of the bed and eats the gummy out of my hand. "Ooh! Bad dog." I say as he chews on it. He jumps back on the bed and shakes. "Man, that thing was nasty." he says. Carlos and I gasp. "And you? You just gotta man up." he says to Carlos. "And while you're at it, scratch my butt." he says. "You heard him. Scratch his butt." I say and I turn to walk towards the door. "Kara." Carlos says and I turn back around. "You're just gonna leave me with him?" he asks. "Yes, I mean it's your dog." I say. "I wouldn't go out that door tho." he says. I stop in my tracks. Right, press. I turn around. "Right, I'll use the window." I say and I walk towards the window. I open it and climb through it. I land behind the bushes and walk around them. Let's go to the kitchen!
